Colour stuck Help!

Hello Houzzers, we are renovating and have just finished our upper floor extension and front window replacements. The house is around 30 years old, double brick and resides by the beach not that there’s anything remotely beachy about it. Our roof and windows are Colorbond night sky. It’s nearly time to paint once this Victorian winter ends. We have almost decided to paint the easy lap parquet night sky/Black the same as the roof. This isn’t set in stone as of yet. Our biggest dilemma and point of contention is what color to paint the shadow board surrounding the upper room (it is currently in its yellow primed state). We need to work with the brick as I am not open to painting or rendering - even though the bricks are dated, they have worked hard over the years and have earned their place, and shall remain as is. I am not adverse to color which sends my husband into a shiver, I was contemplating a green on the shadow board wall panels, but wonder if it will compete too much with the brick. I would like to move away from Greige and also avoid a divorce. Thoughts ideas most welcome!

OK, so I've stared at this picture for ages, wondering what would look best.

If you do intend to paint the easy lap black (which is possibly the best colour) then my suggestion is that you go with the same brown as the wall in front of your house or (dare I say it), pick out the darkest grey from the brick and paint it that colour.

Both these colours work with the bricks and would give the house a contemporary lift. Sorry, not sure about green or introducung a whole new colour, but I could be wrong!

Hi there, I'am liking the grey with that brick and the other thought is to use a corrosive metal look paint on the parapets?

Besides Tractile and Monier Sola tile does / have anyone used other solar products that are NOT PANELS ?, i have looked all over the net and all the companies i have found are in USA and don't want to export to australia. Question is why did bluescope steel get 5 million to develop a product than shelf it. “This is the elevation our builder has come up“.........well, that’s your main problem right there : having a builder to try and resolve the building design.......a well designed building won’t just have a “style” applied to it arbitrarily, and be able swap it over like an iphone cover...... rather it will respond to a whole lot of different things such as context and orientation in regards to how to resolve & balance the roof form & facade articulation..... if you’re struggling with this why not seek professional design assistance, from someone who does this stuff for a living....it’s well worth it for your big investment- best of luck PD :)

Hi there! Just jumping in to offer a bit of advice about the dining room rug: As the chairs will be constantly moving around on top of the rug, you might find that a jute or a synthetic rug would wear very quickly. Your best bet is to choose a material that wears well and is easy to clean such as wool. Opt for a short pile height for under dining tables - they're not only easier to clean, but its easier to push your chair back over a thinner rug than a thicker one! In terms of size, guests should be able to push their chairs back from the table without going over the edge of the rug, so to get the best size, measure your table, then add approx 60 cm. It looks like you might have limited space around your dining table - if you're looking to place a rug, maybe see if you can place the table a bit further out from the wall. For colour choice, opt for a darker colour if it works in the space, as its much more practical when it comes to spills and stains! Hope we've helped :)

I should add to that, there's a new Architect designed house at Boomerang Beach NSW, very modern and all of the house looks like rusted metal, I love it.

I love Paula's ideas

Perhaps charcoal would be less confronting than a deep black, however

Using the brown timber colour that is showing lower front of photo would be great for the window surrounds

Lots of greenery in the garden may give you the colour you are looking for!!

I would be very careful about painting to match Colorbond Night Sky in such an exposed position. Dark black paints tend to absorb more UV radiation and starts to flake off before lighter colours which are less absorbant to UV radiation. Have a look around for any dark black painted buildings that are five years old to see what I mean.

I would not ne introducing a contrast colour, but looking towards the colours that are already in your bricks for inspiration. For the new Easylap panel consider the warm charcoal tones in some of your bricks, and for the shadow board use one of the lighter brown/tan bricks.

If you want a pop of colour then bring it in with the furniture and planting for your new deck.

I often have this problem with my Melbourne clients in matching brick colours as there are so many possible paint colours, and only a limited range available as paint samples in paint outlets. I use a Dulux Snapshot device which gives me very good colour matching accuarcy with the 4800 different colours available from Dulux.

Maybe just a deeper grey. Copper would be good like BM antique copper or similar, a bit out of the ordinary

Leave the brick as is. Render will be very high maintenance by the beach and will look worse than the brick. This is o e of our projects with colourbond dune as accents and deluxe whisper white.

Thank you everyone for your input, we have a lot to think about and luckily some time to decide. I’m liking those copper tones Siriuskey as I had wished we were able to put Corten steel up there - but it wasn’t to be. The easy lap could stay unpainted but it feels washed out at present. It might look better over time. I might just take you up on both accounts Dr Retro haha. This is such a great community of information sharing much appreciated all of you.

I didn't know the easy lap was textured so would most likely go with a concrete look colour and consider using copper toned paint on the R/H First floor wall unless it;s easy lap too, cheers
