Think about the other colours in the room. If you're using a lot of dark colours, a lighter carpet will balance the room. Just be careful as the lighter you go, the more obvious stains are.

I live with a beautiful sea view which I love, but which presents its own set of challenges. When we moved in the interior was painted grey but on an overcast day, all I see out the window is grey - grey sky, grey sea and when I turned around there were grey walls as well. It was quite oppressive. We’ve repainted a lovely soft white which isn’t too dazzling on a bright day, but definitely lifts the gloom on a dull day. I’ve added punches of bright colour here and there and now I love my space (and my view in all weathers)

A whirlybird might help but I remember the consumer magazine had an article about them years ago and they were more useful in some circumstances than others, it was not a matter on stick one on your roof and it fixes a variety of different issues.. As far as reducing heat goes, our neighbours lasted one summer with the whirlybird and then installed a cooling system. So I think a better understanding of the cause of the problem might lead to better solutions. What else is in your roof? Do you have insulation and/or sisalation? Do the bathroom exhaust fans ventilate into the roof space or are they ducted to the outside? Same question for kitchen rangehood?
