Boundary pool fence screening options

We have a paling boundary fence acting as one of our pool fences. It's been painted Monument but I'd like to add battens to make it taller and to give it some interest. The battens will also be painted monument as well because I want to keep the area very monochromatic. Looking for the best way to do this. I would think it would be something I could do myself, but do I use a hardwood or a composite? Don't want any bowing or warping. Because it's a pool fence as well, I'd like them 2.4m off finished height and no more than 500mm apart, so my understanding is that that would be within regulation, and I believe they can be no more than 100mm deep so as to not be climbable, is that correct? Any suggestions or tips would be great thanks! Pic of the actual area and then inspo.
