Comments (2)Id do a pergola with clean lines with retractable blinds/shade in the roof part. There are some DIY blinds on Pintrest. For your windows I think external blinds that stop the heat hitting the glass are your best option....See MoreSouth west facing back yard is too hot .
Comments (6)a simple solid roofed pergola (corrugated steel with panels of lazerlite near any windows) with black Sarlon shade roller binds for hot days and a ceiling fan is a remarkable improvement for outdoor areas,,,surprisingly the black shade cloth is not dark and allows for a cool see through effect like looking through thick fly screens and not only shades in hot weather it also blocks cold draughts in winter ...we experimented with a cheaper DIY option that included shade cloth stretched over simple wooden frames that were meant to be removed in winter but we liked the look and the wind screening so much that the fixed screens were never removed...See MoreHelp! Comments (22)Great suggestions by dreamer, I think a dark colour for all your trims would look great, even the eaves, we painted our eaves same colour as our trims and I absolutely love it, it gives a really edgy stand out look, try with colour swatches to give you an idea, along with your fence to highlight the entrance it will look fabulous. So many colours to choose from, sample pots are worth it to get your desired look....See MoreWest facing back yard needing some shade!
Comments (12)Thanks for your comments. Yes it is a Pea gravel. Currently other works ongoing is levelling and eventually getting going around 50m3 of grass. Around the grassed area is constructed garden beds which currently are being tweaked in which will eventually absolutely have just drought tolerant natives and the bushier the better! Did not want anymore grass then that for maintenance reasons. Very narrow and long block. The big window currently has some pretty great indoor blinds which blocks out most of the harshness unless during heat waves then it does get quite intense. It is more so the angle of the sun that bares down and cuts right into the Pergola from around 12pm until sun down that is quite intense. Really does just make being outside unenjoyable. House has only been established for around 1.5 years so the landscaping etc is still all very much a work in progress....See Moredreamer
