It depends on what your old dining suite actually is, the room it is in, and who uses it. A photo or two would make it easier to comment otherwise I am just guessing.

The only general advice I can give is to be sure you know the construction of your table top before sanding. Most table tops are timber veneer, with a thin layer of timber veneer over particle board. If you sand too much you cut through the veneer to expose the particle board.

Now you have posted a picture of your dining suite, which helps considerably with comments, my comment would be.
Is it an old dining suite, or new, made to look old? (Can't really tell from far away picture). If it is genuinely an antique, then I would not paint. But, it is personal preference. I think the colour of your proposed paint would not add to the aesthetics of your room. I think it would look out of place. The colour you are proposing is a hamptons/beach style. The pictures of painted dining suites, you have shown are all a different style of suite. Yours is more a Queen Anne formal setting. Which I think suits your room at the moment. Unless you are changing curtains, putting rugs in etc, I would not paint your particular suite. But, if it is what you really want, then source a different second hand suite and go for it.

cgeorge1960 - your Belgian Cottage extending table is not right for your room. Save it for your farmhouse kitchen. The legs are poorly proportioned and quite ugly. In addition the price is too cheap for a quality piece - it is a reproduction piece, and probably made with poorer quality timber that has been limed to conceal the timber quality. Under that veneered top you will find particleboard or MDF, not "Poplar" or "Elm Wood" timber. Extension dining tables need to be carefully engineered so that they can extend smoothly, and feel solid and secure when fully extended. Never buy a piece like this without seeing it in real life to see how smoothly and neatly the extension works, and how solid it feels when fully extended. It is a long span between legs!

I would look for something that works with the style of your existing home rather than something so foreign, or live with your heirloom dining suite as it is.
