The deck is Ipe. It is a sustainable farm grown wood from South America. Unlike conventional lumber, even mahogany, Ipe is extremely durable and long lasting. It is in the "Iron Wood" category. They are extremely dense, impervious to rot, resists boring insects and will not burn. We typically recommend Iron wood for all our projects that have decks. We interchange Ipe and Garapa frequently. Iron woods are widely available and are similar in price to a good synthetic decking alternative but we feel the natural wood color is much more attractive. The color is similar to teak if treated with a sealer annually to maintain the rich golden hues.
