In what order should we do things?
Comments (10)I would also go the the majority and paint first. Low VOC paints are also the way to go and as mentioned new carpet also emit toxins etc. so don't leave things to the last minute and keep things well ventilated for a few weeks after completion. If the robes are sliding doors they don't usually have backs so you need to paint the walls before robe installation, believe me as a pro i have painted many the inside of robes, you will have a neater job and save time. Some wardrobe companies insist on the installation prior to carpet so you have a better fit to the floor, so check it out prior to timing the carpet. So paint first, asked your robe company if they have a preference and if not, carpet then robe. Hope baby arrives safe and healthy ready to enjoy the new environment you are making. Good luck and all the best. Regards Paul Wales...See MoreWe have a large living room, with a lot of feature brick walls, which
Comments (0)We have a large living room, with a lot of feature brick walls, which we have no plans to paint over, so seeking a floor covering that will lighten the room. We also have a pet dog and grand children so want something durable. All our furniture is marri wood and the walls that are painted are light ivory. We like the ivory and natural tones. Our colour point is green. What do you recommend...See MoreShould we design our living room open-plan or partly open?
Comments (11)thank you all for your suggestions... meme - the front room currently doesn't get used for a few reasons a) it's only me in the house b)family room gets more sun and natural light c) family room looks out to the garden/courtyard which is a nicer view than the lounge which looks down the drive way (i'm back section of a duplex). I have contemplated the idea of moving dining room to family and using lounge as tv room but as it's just currently me it's nice to have the sun flowing in the family room whilst sitting on the couch and reading a book/watching tv (both rooms are deceptively small - i think wide angle camera used in the promo photos) oklouise - again I think the photo makes the rooms appear larger than they are - I have attached some more photos of the family room for you. I have considered moving the door way to the hall as it is in an awkward position for furniture layout (although I'm not sure the room would accommodate the furniture as you have placed it). Another thing that I should mention is that I'm planning to add a door way to the garage from the kitchen, as I currently walk to the sliding doors to gain entrance to the house. The door will be in the position you have the fridge or even next to it in the far corner - which would still work in your plan. Dr Retro House Calls - I think for me I do like the open plan living (no children yet.) I'm not sure the house would be big enough for a family with teenagers (the 3rd room is very small.) In terms of keeping kitchen tidy - no i'm a very messy cook but it's quickly cleaned up by putting most things in the dishwasher/sink (also I would hope my friends and family wouldn't judge me on the state of my kitchen - and if they did I wouldn't be bothered by it :)) I guess if it was for me then I would go ahead and open plan everything to let as much light in as possible, but also I do need to be aware of resale at some stage (but people are either going to like it or not no matter what you do) Kate - I hadn't thought of that idea - I guess making it smaller would turn it into a min theatre room or reading room? Siriuskey - Interesting suggestion - I'm not sure how the placement of furniture would work in the family room, but I think I need to get past my fear of placing furniture in the middle of a room....See MoreWhat cushions should we get for our living room
Comments (10)Hi there, your room looks lovely and has quite a formal feel. I think a rust or pinky/terracotta in solid colours square 50 x 50 cm (ish) would work in both couch and chairs and tie the scheme together. Velvet or linen would be beautiful and you could keep these as your neutrals. You could then add a rectangular one or two with a grey/rust or teal/rust print, or with one of these colours as piping. These can be swapped out later for a change eg a yellow based print would work against sofa and chairs. Using down fill will always make them look nicer than poly fill. Cushions can be expensive, If you see some you in the neutral colours that you love it is worth spending the money because you will have them for years - some of mine are ten years old. Most places will let you take them home and return them so you can try them out. I then go to fabric stores and look for prints I love and have the accent pieces made up by a local dressmaker for a fraction of the price and something unique to our home. I have mainly velvets and knits for winter then swap them out for linens and cottons for summer. Good luck I am sure your new cushions will add to your already beautiful room....See Moredreamer
