We have been a supplier of OSMO Hardwax Oils for a while now and have found that they have been great in all applications. They have an Oil specifically designed for Kitchen benchtops. OSMO Top Oil which is foodsafe and contains linseed, carnauba wax, candelilla wax, sunflower oil, soybean oil & thistle oil. all heaters and stoves should have very specific installation instructions including distance above the stove to any mantlepiece and i suggest you start with advice from local suppliers and then confirm with specific written instructions from each manufacturer that you can usually find on line...There are a number of heaters that have wood fires that are designed to be inbuilt in a purpose made wooden frame so hopefully this can be done inside your opening

Our last house and our current house both had wood floors and lots of wood furniture. Using area rugs (I've got a weakness for oriental rugs) provides separation between the floors and the furniture. And if the walls are light, as in LesleyH's photo above, you will certainly not feel overwhelmed with wood. The only time there's an issue in my mind is when the walls are also wood clad - that can be a bit confronting and needs management.

It is a funny stair with a mixture of styles. The open riser is a more contemporary look, whereas the newel post, balusters and handrail have a very traditional look. Painting it white will not improve this mismatch of styles. If you paint the treads white then you will be regularly re-painting them as painted stair treads wear back to the timber quite quickly with foot traffic. From your photos it looks like you have a traditional, older style home, so you may want to consider replacing the stair with a new stair that has a more traditional look that doesn't look like a stair that was added in cheaply by a builder who had no idea when your first floor extension was done. However, a traditional stair will make your hallway seem more closed in without the open risers, and having the underside enclosed. The other option is to go very contemporary with steel and timber which is visually lighter and is in contrast with the rest of the entry hall.
