I didn't realise you were into my age group, you are holding up very well. I thought the house was new, that is great you have long term options, are you in a Seniors development with Anglicare? They seem to be very good, they do a lot for my mother-in-law. If the lounge is for you in the hot weather then go all out with a chaise. I say go for it as your door is the window to your home. My advice would be to consider the colour of the flecks in your brick to make sure your chosen colour works with it and not to forget about the colour of your roof and window frames. For example I would have loved a red door but it would have looked ghastly with the green roof on my 25 year-old house. Instead I did black with dark grey window frames (which truly just look black) which works to pick up the black in the brick. I added my big pot plants with green foliage and still got a touch of red in the form of an old chair I picked up from an op shop years ago. The entrance is welcoming, attractive and reflects what is waiting inside. Have fun and if your chosen colour isn't quite right do what I did and find a way of incorporating it into the scheme somehow.

Traditionally if they were painted (not stained timber) they would have been painted to match the trim colour in a semi-gloss or gloss paint. They would never have been painted the same as the wall paint as the wall finish (probably a low-sheen) is not suited to the wear that doors get, and is harder to clean than a semi-gloss.

Can you post any more photos including the staircase, and how the room next to the staircase is accessed interesting extension not following in the traditional manner of the house, Always follow KISS, keep it simple S for the best result. You could add a traditional front door in black but I don't think it necessary as from what I can see in the photo is the entrance and door already have a lot of character.
