I have a conventional concave cornice and I get plenty of cobwebs in the 10mm step out from the wall plaster (but not so much the step out from the ceiling plaster, or maybe it doesn't show so much there). If you are replacing the ceiling I would go with a shadowline rather than square-set which will show every wobble in your plaster or paint. I don't think it is feasible to install a shadowline into an existing ceiling (which will usually have a ragged edge under the existing cornice) but I could be wrong...

Definitely find one firm to do both - there are many benefits in dealing with one company. Cost savings is one - because trades will be scheduled together so you'll save on the number of hours they are on site. But, also, it's much more efficient to simply have one point of contact for the whole renovation. You'll probably find it will run much smoother than if you deal with separate companies and you'll end up with a cohesive design. Also, look for a company with a builders licence if you are looking at removing walls or needing additional construction work - you can always check licence numbers with the Department of Fair Trading to find out more about any company you are considering.

Thanks for your comments so far. Adding to the posts is something another friend has also recommended so seems to be the general consensus and we'll most likely go with that. We are in a tropical area Brandi and I'd love some colour perhaps on the deck walls though unsure what colour and whether we'd need to extend that same colour out to the extension wall also (the white wall in photo) or leave that in Dune? Would that look a bit strange? also if we don't look at adding battens to the ceiling how would it look painted in Surfmist? I'm not to keen on a white ceiling as it can be quite bright out there during the day already.
