Comments (36)It is unfortunate that Ficus Hillii hybrids are being pushed by landscapers. The root system of all ornamental figs is bad. The Flash variety is just a smaller version of Ficus microcarpa which is a massive tree. They ALL have roots that cause severe structural damage to homes, pools, driveways, walls etc. As a very experienced garden designer, I have seen too many instances of considerable structural problems caused by this plant family. Comments (15)Hi Gioenne. Not really. We purchased "advanced" Lilly Pillies for along the back of the fence. They're about the same height as the fence (1.8m). We've also been keeping the interior blinds partially lowered / closed. At the moment, we don't have any outdoor furniture so privacy while relaxing or entertaining outside hasn't been a big problem. Once we have purchased some outdoor furniture we'll re-evaluate the situation depending upon how much the Lilly Pillies have grown. With all of the other "new home" expenses, we'll probably just entertain in full view of our neighbours!...See MoreIdeas for privacy/blockout screening in backyard.
Comments (8)a quick look on HOUZZ revealed many photos of similar ideas... you may like to check out "garden colonnade or climbing roses" for inspiration and i'll keep looking for something suitable..the idea is to build the structure tall enough so that the top is way above the height of the existing fence and you could also add horizontal panels of lattice as well as the climbers to obscure the neighbours' roof and your shrub roses can be planted between the colonnade and the fence The neighbour's structure looks like it's attempting to block out your house it's just not tall enough......See MoreApprox 3 Metre Pot Plant / Shrub Required for Privacy

They have deliberately dropped the landing down to a height that is just below 80cm (as the landing will be just a few metres from our habitable rooms and secluded private open space) while the door itself is over 80cm (this is allowed according to Council and the Victorian Building Authority). Unfortunately, doors are not covered by the current overlooking building regulation (Building Regulation 84) in Victoria, but when this door is opened it looks straight into our open plan living area....See MoreMelissa Browne
