personally I know it is modern but I do not like the wooden addition to the bench. I would suggest you just carry the bench (black marble if you can afford it) so that it has a greater over hang and serves the same purpose as a breakfast bar. To me the wood currently looks an eyesore.

I absolutely love my granite. You just have to be careful not to clean it with anything acidic like vinegar or Orange Power. I wipe it down with a soapy sponge after I wash the dishes and then polish with Method brand granite cleaner. Comes up a treat. It's tough and heat resistant but I do use trivets for hot pans just in case.

Pure mineral stone would be my pick, from the two laminate colours mentioned. The Caravelle tiles are the feature, so you would not want a bench top that will compete for attention.
