Do we need Ceiling Fans?

Hi Everyone,

We are renovating extensively.

Fully insulated roof and walls, light colored roof and exterior, double glazed windows, large eaves, 12 KW Solar and as energy efficient as we can afford.

What are your views on ceiling fans in bedrooms / living rooms? Would we need them as well?

Would the light in a fan be enough for the bedroom, or do we need downlights as well?

I would always put fans into bedrooms. Fan with lights definitely give off enough light without having to have down lights as well. Bedside side lamps would be enough for reading at night, without the main light on.
Each occupant can then put their own fan on, in winter or summer to circulate the air in the room. cool air conditioning may not be required and a fan circulating the air is efficient, and cost effective.

we have fans in living areas and bedrooms to supplement and distribute AC and heating but have also installed ceiling fans in alfresco areas for cooling breezes as they also help discourage flies and mozzies in outdoor areas and built in lights are sufficient indoors and out

Hi there, thanks for your comment I do like the light timber fans but my husband thinks there is too much timber already so I feel a little confused as I want a look that’s says contemporary. We will paint the walls white As I want a beachy feel. I love the retro ligh tooo but, sadly it will be replaced and will be more centred over the staircase. decisions, decisions

For the best ceiling fan designs try Urban Lighting, they have a couple of shops in Sydney and some very unique designs in both traditional and contemporary. I have a deco house too and am looking at their lighting products for our new extension. The lines in your ceiling rose are sharp and square so I think a modern fan would look great, but luckily with deco you can go either way. What is the width ? How sealed is it ? Just looking at the floor , I'm guessing it was originally a terrace , and has been closed in , but often the wind whistles around the top and/or the base , so of course the heat pours out too . How many people , and how often will it be used ? Logically , if bunks fit diagonally across the end , that would be best -- even a double with a single above may give more space , BUT I'm pretty sure that would need access at the end , so maybe not . Otherwise , a couple of single beds may fit along the length , or a bunk across ways and a single may fit -- but you'd need to measure and check , AFTER working out how suitable it would actually be . Next step -- line the roof if required -- add insulation first , then standard gib or ply or I guess even fabric/material if not used much/really short of funds .

Both our bathrooms have the same setup you have shown. Our electrician said the Bunnings heat/light/fan combos are pretty useless and he sourced a more powerful version for us. We kept the round fans as we weren't doing full renos and didn't want to spend more on plastering. Yes, the look is messy but having both is an effective way to manage the steam. Our electrician said to turn the heat and fan on at the start of the shower and keep it running for a few minutes after. We live in a similar climate to you and this works well - although not in the 40 degree summer haha!!

Another vote for bedroom fans here. And the built-in light plus bedsides would be more than adequate.

Yes, if you can I would always install ceiling fans, on very hot nights its always nice to slightly move the air. One piece of advice i would give is be careful how fast they spin on low. We bought fancy looking stainless steel fans and even on low they spun so fast it felt like the roof was going to take off. Ended up changing them to cheaper white ones which were much better. Also, get ones with lights plus bedside lamps for reading as others have suggested.

I prefer a ceiling fan in summer rather than AC while sleeping. Have put white Eglo noosa fans with lights in all bedrooms. They look great and work well
