Paint Lustre - Low-Sheen or Semi-Gloss?

Question re: paint lustre... I am getting my internal block walls repainted and I've read that low-sheen can absorb light. My home is already dark as it doesn't get much direct sunlight (windows all have patio awnings over them on the outside) and they face east/west. The west has the bigger sliding glass doors, while the east has just a small window and a standard door as the light source. Will a semi-gloss look ok on the blockwork instead of a low-sheen finish? I'm thinking it might reflect better? I have no children and no dogs etc, so walls will not be getting high traffic/dirty. Anyone done this in their home and do you have photos to share? if you mean concrete block walls i would prefer the low sheen finish rather than high gloss and extra light can be added by installing Solar Skylights which are a cost effective means of brightening any room without a big hole in the ceiling or roof...

We put gloss tiles on walls so paint should be fine. Give it a go.

Hi susileh, It's important to understand there are a lot of variety of sheen levels available from left to right (no sheen to most sheen): Flat or Matt, Eggshell, Satin, Soft-Gloss, Semi-Gloss, Gloss, Super Gloss etc. For something that will seem a little fresher and new, we recommend going with Cabinetry which is between Eggshell & Satin. Gloss or matte benchtops

Gloss finished laminate benchtops do wear and scratch faster than matt benchtops. Most manufacturers do not recommend that you use gloss laminate for horizontal surfaces for this reason. Laminex Industries have a range called "Diamond Gloss" which has a limited range of colours and patterns that they claim are suitable for horizontal surfaces. http://www.laminex.com.au/uploads/brochures/Laminex%20Diamond%20Gloss%20Brochure.pdf They look good in the photos, but they still feel like a laminate to the touch, and they don't fool anybody due to the dark edging. If your budget limits you to a laminate benchtop it is better to go with a solid colour in a matt, otherwise the imitation stone just looks fake and cheap. Are your internal walls perfectly flat and even? A gloss paint will show every bump and line. Are you doing it DIY? A professional probably won’t use a gloss on the wall, it’s a more difficult job for them.
