Looks an amazing space, how exciting. I would be hesitant to introduce contrasting paint colours, feel tonal works better in large spaces. A deep terracotta or dark red could bring forth all the warmth from the wood lovliness

What a beauty, lucky you. I'am a big fan of Black and I also love Buddhist red, darker colours make a room feel cosy, I also love all white.

I have done a rough mock up showing the room painted dark including the picture rail is a must, with white above between it and the ceiling, all other painted surfaces white, although you might like the skirts done the same as the wall colour. can't wait to see it finished

I think white might be too stark against the kauri panels but i like the idea and thanks for the mock up.

For bold colour combinations have a look at No Chintz Australia on Pintrest and Instagram. The proprietor has a fabulous eye for colour and pattern and the products and colours are quite inspiring. If you Google hard enough you may find some pics of her own residence. It’s the best use of colour that this neutral living person has ever seen.

This is a No Chintz fabric. The blue is similar to that you’ve used. The Khaki colour would be amazing In a pigmented Porters Paints if they had something similar. Bold doesn’t need to mean red. The Linen colour (and Porters Paints do have something similar) could be your trim colour throughout. It’s a neutral that will work with strong wall colours and all the timber.

What a huge amount of character ! Being Kauri , I'm guessing NZ too ?

You say you don't want stark white , and like bold colours , and have an eclectic mix of furniture . I'd work things in reverse -- what colours are your furniture ? Will you be adding more -- what styles and colours ?

My basic thoughts are to make the focus on the furniture ( and any art ) , as well as the floors and ceilings , so go for an off-white on the walls , with a tinge of say blue or green or cream or apricot or whatever works with the furniture ( just as an aside , that 50's green in some of the pictures would work with say brown leather furniture , but I don't like it with that grey and chunky wood lounge suite ) .

Then bring the bright colours in via art and rugs and cushions etc /

I hope that makes some sense .

Just because it's a large room, doesn't mean it has to be dark and brooding. I agree with pottsy about neutral walls and let the ceiling, floor, panels sing. A large persian style coloured rug to pull it all together.......... keep it simple

We like this combo - hailstorm on the walls and half woodsmoke for trim - that allows some neutral tones that can be picked up in curtains/blinds. we have lots of colourful, mostly framed art. I agree on Persian rugs (already looking)

I've also been looking at different linens for long curtains, mostly to suit the smoke trim. I'll put together some samples and make a board to test the colours all together.

I agree with above. Maybe a light greenish grey Color like volcanic ash in Porters Paint. This would make the ceiling shine. You could use antique white for window trims & skirting boards. Add warmth & Color through accessories.

yes the volcanic ash and the full wood smoke are very similar.

Love the wood and blue wall combination in your ispiation pics,  since the ceilings are soooo gorgeous it could give you a very gentleman 's club vibe if you went in this direction. I wouldn't do an above and below picture rail, the one color for the whole height. So sumptuous!

Check out interior designer Brett Mickan’s projects, Ferdinand st being a big heritage project. He’s really good with bold warm colours and nails the heritage respect without feeling like the place is just a vintage redo. Have you considered getting an interior designer to help? I think in a special project like yours they are worth their weight in gold!! Good luck, I love the property.

I think you've done well to steer away from the red/terracotta colours. There's already so much warmth in the ceiling and floor. Toning it down with green/grey tones would be better in my opinion. And definitely the window trims and doors in a different colour. You want to draw attention to those fabulous features.
