White Knight also have a laminate paint but any semi gloss or gloss enamel paint works just as well. The key to a good finish is the preparation; clean thoroughly to remove any grease/oil, fill any dents & areas where laminate is chipped, reglue any loose edge strips, sand, wipe clean with methylated spirits, apply an oil based undercoat, leave to dry overnight, lightly sand with very fine (black) sandpaper, apply 1st top coat, leave to dry for at least 24 hours, if necessary very lightly sand, apply final top coat then leave to cure for a few days before rehanging. Recommend painting backs & fronts, the best finish will be achieved by removing the doors, catches & handles. Use a low nap small roller. Alternatively, if you're quite experienced with a spray gun, you can paint more doors in one session as long as you have a clean dust free space to set them out. In my last house, after adding a living room (the area you see this side of the arch) and also updating bathroom etc I couldn't afford to reline the ancient walls in my little lounge (when I removed the purple wallpaper I found a mixmax of boards, gib, pinex, plywood and holes!) so I plastered walls all over with layers and layers of newspaper and wallpaper paste (papier mache), then after applying primer/undercoat I painted with 2 similar colours (rich reds in this case), and stippled the surface with a plastic bag. This made it look just very slightly textured like leather and successfully disguised the uneven surfaces. Gallons of gap filler filled the gaps between the old T&G ceiling boards and evened out the mismatched skirting and scotia. Again white paint on all the trims. You have quite a complex internal painting job in front of you. I would use the elements that are going to be retained as a starting point. So if you have stained timber, where you can see the original grain through the stain then use that as a starting point to work with throughout the home. Never paint stained timber as it is then lost forever, but work with it. Dulux alone has about 4800 different colours, so don't limit yourself to the few hundred colour chips that are on display at Bunnings. The Dulux colour consultants are usually good value, and have got access to the full range, but in my experience are more suited to contemporary schemes, and don't have training in heritage schemes. If you want to be authentic to the original art-deco details it may be worthwhile engaging a design consultant who specializes in heritage colour schemes. When I am matching original paint schemes for my clients I use a digital colour analyser that reads the original colour and gives the three closest contemporary equivalents. Many original art deco colour schemes were fairly dramatic with fewer neutrals than are used today. Many older homes have different wall colours in different rooms. The idea of having the same wall colour for every room is really a result of the project home industry as it streamlines the decision making (and painting) process, but doesn't really make a lot of sense when you think about how your rooms have different orientations, different light and different uses. Don't rush the process as your perception of the colours will depend on the lighting, time of day, and the colours of adjacent elements. Don't base your selections on any digital images as they are always inaccurate. Try and source larger samples, or sample pots, before investing in your paint. Finally with your painter be specific and use post-it notes to tell them where you want each colour to be painted. You could add a traditional front door in black but I don't think it necessary as from what I can see in the photo is the entrance and door already have a lot of character. The lovely Picket will look less fussy if done in one colour quoting Taking the new build/old build divide quite literally, the existing cottage has been redefined as a crisp white entity. In a street of Heritage vernacular, where every architectural shift is picked out in a nuanced tone, this is a drastic departure in itself.
