Tips for painting over oil-based paint on doors and trim

Hi everyone!
I'm looking to paint over oil-based with water-based paint (oil based has yellowed and cracked at joins around windows) + like the idea of quicker drying time and less smell.
I'm getting conflicting advice when searching online, so thought I'd ask for advice from people who've had real-life experience.
Is there a primer that I can use over oil-based paint WITHOUT needing to sand it all back? Or is sanding a major part of the process?
And what are the recommended primers to use for this kind of job? Trying to avoid products with a super strong smell as I have young kids, a dog and hugely asthmatic husband.
Thanks in advance!
