love your plant choices, color and design. I have a sloping backyard

last year

Looking for recommendations for a sloping yard rock area. Would like to grow something in between the rocks. To soften the look.
I am in Northern California. Thanks

Hi Ruchi,

There are several plants that work great in rockeries. The direction of exposure will dictate plant selections for shade or sun but I am assuming you also need drought tolerant plantings.

The purple ground cover in the photo is red mother of thyme, Thymus serphyllum. It is a great drought resistant plant. Others that work in rockeries are.

Moss Phlox, Phlox subulata

Lithodora

Sedum Spectiblis 'brilliant and Autumn Joy'

Golden moss sedum, Sedum acre

Firefly Heather, Caluna vulgaris 'firefly'

Gold Yarrow, ACHILLEA 'GOLD PLATE

Sea thrift, ARMERIA MARITIMA

Alpine sandwort, ARENARIA OBTUSILOBA

Blanket flower,GAILLARDIA

Red hot poker,KNIPHOFIA 'ROYAL STANDARD'

Lavender, pretty much any one.

Dwarf mugo pine, PINUS MUGO 'SLOWMOUND'

Creeping rosemary, ROSMARINUS OFFICINALIS 'PROSTRATA'

Salvia, SALVIA SUPERBA 'BLUE HILLS'

Red mother of thyme, THYMUS SERPHYLLUM

These are just a few plants that work great in rockeries, are drought tolerant and stay small. I hope this helps and let me know how it goes.

What area in Melbourne? I ask because I'm near the beach and it can affect your plant choices greatly. You are best to go to a local plant grower so you know they can grow in your area and the sales people know what might work best with your soil. I love the shed so I wouldn't hide it. If you plant Australian natives around it, it could look like a bush hut. Have you got young children? If so you could put the pond I front of the shed and then put up a cute fence around it so they can look but not drown. Pinterest have lots of great ideas, it's worth having a look. These photos are from Pinterest. I'm about to build on very sandy soil so I'm going to go for a native garden too. Your lucky having some large beautiful trees.

Hi Nathan - I suggest you use what you have already. if the soil is poor, plant something that likes poor soil like nasturtiums. The leaves and flowers are edible and peppery. Ferns are good in damp areas too. These would have a deep water effect around the deck. Desert plants are lovely with coloured gravel - no spiky ones if you haven't much room. Maybe put down fake lawn so no mowing. Nail up a large mirror to enlarge the view of plants and flowers etc Strong mesh to hold up two vines - clematis, passion flower, mexican glory vine, pandera or a prize-winning table grape trained up the washing line. I did this with an old rotary line so we could sit underneath in the shade and eat grapes :) I would wash the fences very evenly with white or coral lime wash. Cheapish to make. i would experiment with beetroot juice and curry powder (the strongest stain-makers) to get the shade of coral. Cheers Hooley D
