Need help with deciding to go coastal paneling (white T&G panels)
Comments (43)Hi Tina, thanks for posting, it is all looking great. Shame about the panelling, but sometimes these things happen for a reason. It is great the armoire matches the doors so well when they are all on one wall, but I don't think you need to have the bed and side tables matching, especially when they are on another wall. My issue with painting furniture, while I love it, is the maintenance. It does chip over time and becomes one more thing to paint. I don't know what the timber is in your furniture but another possible option, especially to give you the coastal vibe is to lime it. To do this successfully, you will need to sand all the existing stain off it and go back to the raw timber. The darker the original timber, the less limed look you will get so bear that in mind too. I did an old bunk bed up that had seen better days, for my grands bedroom. It was a dark red wood, but with 4 coats of stain I got the look I was after which was that driftwood/coastal look. The whole thing looks totally new again. Sorry I can't post a photo as this function no longer works for me. Have a look at the Feast Watson range of liming stains, they have some gorgeous soft colours as well, but they let the timber show through rather than having the solid painted look. It is a very easy product to use, it dries quickly - I did the 4 coats over 2 days effortlessly. The hard work is in the sanding....See MoreHelp needed for our dated front hall
Comments (15)I must be weird , because as soon as I saw the picture , I saw 3 areas that I would change -- but they are totally different to the other replies . I actually like the warm timber -- okay , its worn or maybe needs cleaning with 'scrunchy pads' around the door , but to me that's pretty minor . My 3 improvement areas though -- recolour the tiles . Personally , I'd go for black -- I did a sandy tiled terrace 2 or 3 years back using about 2/3rds black gloss paint mixed with 1/3rd turps -- soaked in reasonably well and still looks good . Number 2 -- the lights . I dislike them -- and made even worse by being 2 different styles . Maybe 4 LED downlights if you can get into the ceiling easily ( but then where you remove that coach style light will be discoloured ) . But being relatively tight haha , I'd probably change both the wall and ceiling lights to those black rhombus shades and ornamental style LED filament bulbs . And number 3 -- the door mat . Again , my personal taste , but I dislike those coir mats anyway , and ones with flags or messages even more . Once the tiles had been redone to look black , I'd add a red or teal or royal blue or orange or whatever colour mat matches and complements your interior colours . $500 maximum ( unless you go with the LED downlight idea ) and a couple of hours , and it would totally change the look ....See MoreTwo toned kitchen - materials choice
Comments (2)Hello, thank you for your response. For some reason the site defaulted to the Australian discussion forum when I posted but I just went with it anyways and didn't think much of it. I understand your point about different perspectives in different countries though, thanks. I know this is all based on personal preference but I like either option of so I am looking for some other opinions. The developer has been very helpful with the different options and we plan to speak to some other local professionals as well. We have seen the materials in person (except for cabinets) in very small sample sizes and all of the colours seem to compliment eachother but for the purpose of this post a digital photo was the only option of course....See MoreShould I paint wood paneling?
Comments (9)I love the wood . Its the rest that needs the work IMO -- particularly the carpets . Nice in themselves , but very dated . Also its a bit hard to tell the exact tones because of the lighting being on , but I suspect the white of the walls is too white , but also I personally don't like the walls and ceiling being done the same tone either . The roof and mouldings I'd keep in a sharp white , the walls I'd go an English white or Spanish white or even a slightly reddish tinge ( but not pink if that makes sense ) to reference the warmth of the timber . In fact , that's probably a lie -- I'd be more likely to wallpaper -- the bedroom in say light yellow flowers on an offwhite paper , and the carpet would work then ; the lounge in a burgundy and gold striped paper would be the schizz haha , and again the carpet may even live another couple of years !...See Morebigreader
