Design dilemma - no street appeal

Hello! Any ideas for our garage/entrance. The house is set back from the road. We are keen to please understand what we could do to improve it?

Replace flat roof of garage with pitched roof, doesn't need to be high, just not flat which looks boring and cheap. Or just add at the front as a "fake" but that will look odd side on.

Perhaps extend the roofline out a tad, or give it a more finished/substantial edge and replace with more interesting doors? A little landscaping, for instance a couple of taller plants in large pots on either side? Even a more saturated colour, if budget is tight

Do you have saw palmetto, it is a native groundcover plant in Florida, that has a tropical look and covers the ground through underground shoots, and would give you a bold look, in which you could weave an entrance walk from the street to your entrance terrace at the foot of your front steps. A less tropical choice would be spreading juniper. No lawn, just beds of shrubs. Be simple and bold. When you build your front steps, please use dimensions for outdoor steps. That is, the tread should be at least 12'(30 cm) and the ratio of risers to tread should be approximate: two risers plus one tread equals 26"(66 cm).

Analysis first, then design, please. Decide all the activities that you and your family wish to occur in the front and side yards, that are not appropriate to the rear. Look at all the views as you approach the house, as well as the views from all the windows of the house. If you have underground utilities, map them out, so you and your contractors know their precise location. Think of how your guests will approach the house, that is why there is a front walk from the street. Don't trash it, resurface it, and consider charming them with the beauty and fragrance of plants on the way to your door, while admiring your home revisions. Where will you welcome your guests? How about an outdoor room with a little furniture to sit and have morning coffee with the morning news, invite your neighbor over, you won't have to invite them into your house, just your outdoor room. Will the kids want some activiies to be based on your new driveway surface? Will the new drive provide a turnaround space, so you and your guests don't have to back out onto the street? Can we see the rear yard, or is it a perfect fit to your family needs. Enjoy your new home, it's a beauty.

Like most of the others , I'd go for white shutters , but there's a few other things too . It looks like someone has 'filled in' the base with similar bricks , not exactly the same and different mortar . Even if it matched , it adds height , but now it just grates . And then the steps are nothing , and the stainless rails and wires are way different style , and then it looks like concrete garden walls around the front that are getting a bit black . And then it looks like a white gate to the left , but its 100mm too long ? Where the 2 brick styles meet , I'd do a plastered 150mm wide 'border' along the length , including the front wall -- protruding maybe 30mm , and then probably plaster/render the lower part too -- make it smooth ! The 'border' I'd paint in crisp white , the lower section could be a beige , maybe a mid-charcoal ? I'd probably do the steps ( or the sides ? ) in the same beige or mid-charcoal or whatever you decide . The white shutters will lift the main parts , the 2 toning of the base with take away some of the bulk .

What throws me off is the side fence, looks like you might have a construction site next door. Also on the lower facade you have the triple window and then a single window or door with what looks like a green blind on it. Confusing as to purpose of that window and it’s throwing me out. Is or was it front door? Otherwise really pretty house, Keep rest simple. Do like the cross bar idea for gable, just as I said keep it simple.

The garage has exactly nothing in common with the house . Totally different colours , totally different designs , totally different eras . If you have $100 , try this experiment -- go and buy some white paint , paint the front of the roof of your garage white to match the guttering of your house . Let it dry , stand back -- does it look better ? Give you any ideas ?

Okay , what colour is your house entrance door ? Lets say it is black , and your windows are obviously white , because we can see one . So paint the garage door surround white , and the door black .

Now the bricks are trickier -- painting the garage orange may backfire , as there are several shades in the bricks , whereas the garage will just look like an orange shed . But the actual front is only a very small area , so maybe go to a demolition firm ( or see if theres similar tones still made ) and get as close to the bricks as you can , and get a brickie to do a false facade in them , just that 300mm or whatever around the door ? The rest ( down the side of the garage ) I'd do an offwhite with orange undertones , add a black lattice ( even just that concrete reiforcing painted black would do , bolted 150mm out from the wall with spacers ) , plant a creeper and/or shrubs of different heights and tones , if there isn't a pathway there .

I think making it more contemporary would look great, using cladding to modernise and bulk up the look would add instant street appeal, keeping it simple and minimal would be all that you need, you could add side lighting or stri lighting above roller door for added appeal.
