BDA Australia Design Awards 2016 - Secondary Dwellings up to $50,000
A requirement for additional guest accommodation /studio for a residence in a 30 acre rural setting at Goulburn, NSW was achieved by Simon Croker of SC Design Solutions through the design of a conversion of an existing unused steel frame shade cloth structure (used by previous owners as a greenhouse) to a self-contained highly functional guest retreat, celebrating the rural setting and country parkland style garden. The studio retreat has a flexible open plan which allows for alternative use of space, based around three core elements of kitchenette, sitting and bedroom areas. By topping the existing concrete slab and infilling the steel frame/ roof, the 36m2 footprint is maintained. With high performance wall and roof insulation, the retreat is also passively heated and cooled with large glazing windows /openings located on east and north orientations, providing privacy from the home and emphasises landscape views. The use of reclaimed Tasmanian Oak flooring from a school house in Tasmania and locally sourced Blackbutt timber for windows, doors and external decking made for a cost effective but aesthetically pleasing and vibrant choice of materials. External galvanised iron cladding complements whilst integrates with the adjacent stone rubble walls of the existing home and broader rural landscape. The outdoor northern deck provides private retreat and expansive country views. Materials and natural hues complement the surrounding natural environment and are a nod to the structure's history as an operational greenhouse.
