BDAA National Design Awards 2019 - Non residential interiors

Carinya Premium Wines is a flagship wine tasting venue, in Haikou Provence, China, showcasing their Australian premium wines. The design response focused on the creation of a space that conveyed a distinctive, contemporary and dynamic expression of their premium Australian wine label, to their targeted Chinese patrons. The textures and angular forms of the Australian timber and sandstone finishes contrast beautifully with the more subdued limestone finishes of the surrounding hotel environment. The design layout appears both spacious and welcoming with generous amounts of casual tasting and cocktail seating, despite the limited floor area. The design features a large ‘boomerang’ bar centerpiece that is constructed in two sections and movable, in order to separate into a smaller reception and bar area for functions. The ‘boomerang’ form is further abstracted into a dramatic ceiling treatment. Entry into the VIP room is via a ‘hidden door’ disguised as a wine display, in order to heighten a sense of drama and exclusivity for patrons. The extensive use of LED strip lighting within the display joinery further adds to the visual interest and complexity of the design.
