BDADesign Awards 2016 - New Residential Buildings 351 -450sqm & under $2000/sqm
The Workable Living Project was an exciting opportunity to create a residence for a ground-breaking housing project - serving real purpose for the community by allowing disabled adults to live independently. The residence required a unique special use design for a group of four individuals with disabilities making the transition from being cared for at home by family to independent living in a supported group home environment. It was critical for the design of the residence to function in two different ways, firstly by allowing for shared living spaces, and secondly, by creating separated private areas. The design was collaborative, working closely with residents and their carers to decide upon textures and colours, and individual relationships with outdoor spaces. The main communal living/kitchen area is central to the building which opens up to the outdoor covered area to the north capturing the views of the ocean and solar access. The feature louvre roof optimizes the northerly access to the sun in winter and shading in summer. The four pods are private, self-contained and have been positioned for northerly aspects, solar access and ocean views. The result is a bright, solar passive, energy efficient and functional residence.
