5 Fashion Trends That Translate Into Decor
Your personal style can extend all the way into your home thanks to these easy-to-try trends
It can be hard to keep up with the world of fashion. In New York City, spring 2015 fashion week has just taken place, but here in Australia we’re in the midst of the spring 2014 season – and then there is the autumn/winter season that falls in between!
Luckily, there is one place where fashion trends can live on and on, and that is in your home. Whether you are a fan of the minimalist aesthetic seen at shows such as Jason Wu and Narciso Rodriguez, or you prefer the big and bold looks spotted on the runway thanks to Alexander Wang and Lanvin, you can easily translate these looks into decor ideas perfect for your space.
With these styles in mind, here I show you how you can bring five spring fashion trends into your home … and make them last.

With these styles in mind, here I show you how you can bring five spring fashion trends into your home … and make them last.
ADOPT THE TREND: Think about the many motifs that go along with your idea of Western movies. For example, you might conjure up images of the many animals on the range – such as cows, buffalos and wild horses – or you might evoke thoughts of the Wild West and its cactus and burly men. Either way, once you have an image in mind, it is simple enough to incorporate it into your home, as you can see in the above room.
2. Say it with slogans
The spring runways were awash with loud and proud slogans. Alexander Wang made waves with his Parental Advisory-logo knits, while Kenzo used its platform to make a political statement.

ADOPT THE TREND: Look for equally loud and proud wall art. Although, naturally, your art choices should fit in with both your ideals and your design themes, this trend is all about being bold. That means you should look for pieces that turn heads – whether because of their bright colours, their graphic fonts or their oversized frames.
3. Go iridescent
One of the ‘brightest’ trends spotted on the spring runways was iridescence, as seen at shows by Lanvin and Marc by Marc Jacobs, among others. This trend involved metallic fabrics in shades of purple, green and blue, to name a few.

ADOPT THE TREND: When it comes to incorporating this trend into your home, there are many directions you can go. You can start small by picking up decor items like vases, statues, bowls or lamps; you can take it to the next level by using a bedspread (like the one in the previous photo), a set of cushions or even a statement chair; or you can really go for volume and build it into your house through tiles, as shown here.
BONUS TIP: The key to this trend is to let it steal the focus as it is meant to. So, if you pick out an iridescent bedspread, you should use low-key sheets and furniture in the rest of the room.

4. Perfect pastels
While some of us lean towards bold decor looks, others lean towards minimalist styles. Luckily, there is a trend that works perfectly for the latter: pretty pastels. Spotted at shows including Jason Wu and Rag & Bone, these are great for the laid-back, low-key type.

ADOPT THE TREND: Pastels are super easy to incorporate into your home – whether you opt for a small touch (a pastel pillow) or paint an entire room in your favourite pale shade.
BONUS TIP: The key to utilising pastel hues is to scale the saturation according to how low-key you want the look to be. If you want to make the most of your minimalist aesthetic, opt for just a hint of colour – the faintest of pinks, for example. The further up the colour scale you go, the less low-key you are.

5. Make it black and white
Using all but two colours – specifically, black and white – is a classic trend that comes back season after season, and with good reason. Not only is it super chic, but it also works for everyone. The proof was in the pudding at the Narciso Rodriguez and Helmut Lang shows.
ADOPT THE TREND: When it comes to incorporating this trend into your home, you can go in one of two directions. The first is the easiest: set aside one area, one piece of decor or one piece of furniture where you will try the trend. For instance, you could incorporate black and white tiles (like shown here), find a black and white rug, set up a wall full of black and white photo frames, or try the look with curtains, cushions and ottomans, among other soft furnishings.

The second way is trickier, but it certainly catches the eye: a full black and white room. This means avoiding all other colours when it comes to the main fixtures and fittings, then layering black and white pieces so they transform your room into a chic bold space.
