Wonderful article about something close to my heart. Number 11 is our Bamboo Bathroom, thanks to Houzz for recognizing great design features that have real purpose!

In my NYC 96 year old mother's rent stabilized apartment, we had to contact the New York City Commissionon Human Rights to compel her landlord to widen the bathroom door to allow her walker inside the tiny bathroom. I had him put up a sliding barn door to alleviate having a hinged door opening out or in. Fantastic remedy! Also had landlord remove all saddles between rooms and into the apartment. He got away with a tub cut out instead of a curbless walk in shower which was a nightmare because he left a 4 inch high and 5 inch wide lip--actually a platform-- that my legally blind mother had real fear of stepping over it and it was too small to step on. Be aware of all the details when trying to make a home ADA. BTW, if you live in NYC and need assistance getting your landlord to provide a reasonable accommodation that you need due to a disbability, DO CALL the NYC CCHR and file a complaint. It's free and they wield a lot of power!

I have come to realize that most remodeling clients do not consider the fact that they are aging when coming up with remodeling designs for their bathrooms. As their contractor, I need to keep their age as a consideration when undertaking their projects. I mostly recommend installing a shower bench to clients of mine that are retirees or already have health conditions that can become aggravated by too much standing. With the shower bench, also comes the handheld showerhead to make it easier for the clients to wash while seated.
