Universal Design Challenge in a Period Victorian Style Kitchen & Home

The goals included a Victorian Period look and universal design features. The use of an induction cooktop with safety from a flame was incorporated as young ones begin to help in the kitchen and has become the go to. Easy access to pans hung on the wall and wider isles for wheelchair mobility was incorporated. Other interesting features like the touch less faucet and anti-microbial copper sink are never a bad idea. The tile hood and pot filler reinforce the functional hardworking quality of the kitchen. The glass cabinet are wonderful for display, feature antique hardware and wood brackets for that authentic Victorian vibe.

The door to the porch is where a window used to be. The breakfast nook is where the gas range used to be. The benches are built-in, braced against the wall. The table in the nook is maple butcher block. The nook has a tubular skylight above it to provide daylight over the table. The microwave on the counter doubles as a convection oven, providing a small 2nd oven. The pendants and ceiling lights are from Rejuvenation Lighting. All of the tile is original. For starters, you want to find a balance between aesthetics and function. You may have heard of the ‘kitchen work triangle’, which refers to the space between your fridge, sink and stove. You want everything within easy reach when you’re working in the kitchen and look beautiful at the same time. It’s a good idea to take note of both when browsing our photo gallery.

2. Consider Your Space to Determine Your Kitchen Layout

Firstly, consider the space you have, and the limitations that come with it. Do you have a small kitchen and need to maximise your workspace and storage?
