We took a small space out of this footage by elongating the hallway to provide a utility room opposite a full height, double coat cupboard before entering the new kitchen. As this is a new part of the house we embraced the modernity and choose sleek, handleless blue cabintery. The bronzed mirrored splashback adds warmth as well as maximising the sense of space. This small space demanded attention to detail and smart solutions, starting with the table and chairs. Too tiny for a standard kitchen table, we added a table that folds down against the wall with foldable chairs that can be hung on the wall when not in use. Typically neglected space between the refrigerator and the wall was turned into spice cabinets, ceiling height uppers maximize storage, and a mirrored backsplash creates the illusion of more space. But small spaces don't have to be vacant of character, as proven by the distressed aqua cabinetry and mismatched knobs.

Our clients created a new glazed link between two parts of their home and wanted to relocate the kitchen within this space, integrating it with their existing dining area. It was important to them – and to us – that our design was in keeping with the period property, and the end result was magnificent fusion between old and new, creating a fluid link to the rest of their home. The large breakfast bar was finished in solid American walnut and incorporated a bespoke pop-up gin bar, another playful touch. This makes for a stunning showpiece, a surprising feature that acts as a real talking point.

As this is a new part of the house we embraced the modernity and choose sleek, handleless blue cabintery. The bronzed mirrored splashback adds warmth as well as maximising the sense of space. The open French doors from the middle reception shows where we extended into the side return. The lower wall (restricted in height as it is now a bounary wall with neighbours) with the pitched ceiling shows where we extended into the footpath which lead from the front of the house to the rear garden as this is a semi detached house. By doing this we created enough width to have a large island and space to walk around the dining table. This layout would not have been possible with a standard side return only extension. 1. What Makes a Good Kitchen Design, and Why is it Important?

For starters, you want to find a balance between aesthetics and function. You may have heard of the ‘kitchen work triangle’, which refers to the space between your fridge, sink and stove. You want everything within easy reach when you’re working in the kitchen and look beautiful at the same time. It’s a good idea to take note of both when browsing our photo gallery.

2. Consider Your Space to Determine Your Kitchen Layout

Firstly, consider the space you have, and the limitations that come with it. Do you have a small kitchen and need to maximise your workspace and storage? Which appliances do you already own and what are their measurements? Are there windows you need to take into consideration when planning cabinets? How do kitchen, living and dining areas connect? Know your dimensions, plan cabinetry carefully and consider the placement of your appliances. You don’t want to end up with a finished design, only for your significant other to question where the fridge is supposed to go. Consider from the start where your fridge, oven, microwave and sink goes to save yourself from starting again from scratch - remember the kitchen work triangle! You also want to plan the layout of your cabinets. Maybe you’re planning for a pantry and can do with less storage space in your kitchen, so that your design can be one without upper or lower cabinets for a different look. A corner cabinet can be a smart storage solution if you want to keep the look clean and simple.

3. Decide on a Kitchen Style, But Don’t Forget Practicality

You want the style of your kitchen to reflect your personality and taste.
