“Our goal was to renovate a 3-bedroom ranch house, expand the living space with two additions, and change the roof line from flat '60's ranch to Prairie style. While we had a rough layout of the interior, clearly we needed an architect to guide the structural transformation to get the exterior look we wanted. We needed plans to guide the builders and elevations so we could see how it would appear on the site. Jeffrey Morton brought all of that and more. He has a flair and enthusiasm for renovation and saw the possibilities right away. After a thorough inspection of the structure from the foundation crawl space to the roof and the exterior from every angle, he quickly produced a first draft. The fuzzy vision in our imaginations was clearly rendered on paper. When the tricky roof line conversion needed some additional work, he provided the revisions promptly. The project was completed and is everything we hoped for.”

“I am a roof truss designer with 12 years of experience. I have worked with Ian Schroeder numerous time on many different houses in the Quad Cities over the past several years. My job as a truss designer is to provide a roof package that is built per the set of plans provided from the house/building designer. If those plans aren't accurate or if they are difficult to interpret, I could make a mistake on my end that can cost time and money to everyone involved in the project, sometimes even the home owner. That being said, it is my professional opinion that Ian Schroeder provides some of the most detailed and accurate plans I have ever seen. “GWA is the go-to team for adaptive re-use, historic renovation or restoration projects. Our project involved a 160 year old building that started out as a mattress factory, then printing businesses and a ladies department store, ultimately ending up standing nearly empty for 40 years. After complete interior renovation and major exterior repair the result is mixed-use, that is, commercial space on the ground floor with upscale residential lofts above. It has become a downtown Rockford (IL) icon, having won statewide and local awards. The building has been the subject of numerous organized tours benefitting not-for-profit, historic and downtown advocacy organizations. Working with the Gary Anderson team, loft owners designed their spaces to suit individual tastes. Visitors are typically surprised and delighted to see such starkly different interior treatments represented in the same building. In addition, residents can enjoy a rooftop deck and container garden throughout the majority of the year. Historic projects invoke uniqueness, individual owners expected attention to detail, and the overall scope of the project demanded plenty of project coordination. When updating very old buildings it is not unusual – and we did -- experience instances involving significant structural concerns, codes and regulation issues, supplier and material questions ... and plenty of others. Gary dealt with all of these in stride. He and the team were consistently dedicated, sensitive and responsive. It would be difficult to imagine better people to work with.”
