Ed Ewers Architecture
Richmond, Victoria Architects
29December,2015
We have used Ed for both of our renovations and have found him to be a great architect. For our first project we used Ed for both the design and the project management of a small renovation. We loved the design which dragged a 1970s monstrosity of a house (think lots of mission brown and wood panelling) right into the 21st Century. Tweaks that Ed made to layout just made the house 'work'. We were exceedingly happy with the result. Ed and his team worked tirelessly behind the scenes so that while we had the usual decisions to make, any of those problems that inevitably turn up on the site were solved before they hit our radar. Our second project was based in Sydney (see Ed's project titled 'Springfield' ) and although we spoke with some local architects we didn't get the same comfortable feeling as we had with Ed. Our second renovation was a major undertaking on a heritage listed house where there had been multiple renovations done in the past and little coherence. The floorplan had small spaces left over that had no practical use and the house was very tired. We extended but only by a small amount but again by rationalising the floorplan we have ended up with a much more usable space. The end result is a gorgeous home. This time I was the project manager but Ed and his team remained on call through-out for whenever my builder or I had any queries. What I love about Ed is that we have achieved a great balance between gorgeous design and practicality. The space looks fab but it is also easy to live in and we love that!

We hired MAN architects to renovate our terrace house in Balmain. We couldn't have been happier with the end result. The passion for their industry and enthusiasm for our project was evident. They listened to our brief and created solutions that we couldn't have dreamed of. Kate and Rob are a pleasure to work with.
Architest Pty Ltd

Architest are a unique company who built our new home's floorplan to scale in their warehouse using foam blocks. It was a brilliant way for someone like me to visualise what our new home would look like in terms of spatial awareness, positioning of kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms, windows, doors and even our staircase. It really bought our potential renovation/build to life. The 2 walk-throughs of our home allowed us to change some ideas and tweek some rooms we weren't sure about before we submitted our final plans to Council. Thanks to Simon and his team for having the initiative to develop such an impressive service that is sure to be a winner for all future renovators. Can't believe it has never been thought of before.

Amazing experience. Sarah Bryant/Stephanie Reed Marshall, from Bryant Alsop Architects, were a real dream team. Everything they came up with from a Design perspective was invaluable in creating an remarkable renovation to our family home. Every square inch of the home was designed to maximise space and experience. Their knowledge was on show during Project Managing the build, which saved us a huge amount of time (and money). We would highly recommend their services.

Andrew Child designed and supervised the builder during construction of our new home. We had never used an architect before but were reassured with Andrew's sound advice and guidance throughout the whole process. We were impressed with Andrew's creative ideas and cleverly integrated them into the design of our lovely new home. The building of our house also went smoothly. It was obvious that Andrew had a good relationship with the builder and tradesmen on site. Any issues that arose were quickly resolved. We now live in a way we could never have imagined when we think back to the empty block of land we had in the beginning. Our house is full of calm, sunny spaces that integrate well with the outside. Living here is a delight.

We had initial discussions with a number of architects before we met Jane from alsoCAN and were becoming rather downcast about our planned renovation to our house. None of the earlier architects seemed to listen to what we wanted and charged ahead with their own concepts. Jane was different she listened to our ideas and also our desire that any design should assist us to keep with in our prescribed budget so as to avoid over capitalisation. Our property had 100 years of modification and attachments to it one build upon another and by the time of our renovation it was a complicated multi-time period property. Jane was able to take the vision we had for the property and enhance that vision with her experience and creativity. Jane did this through listening meaningfully to her clients, employing her own professional skills and a good dose of practical judgment and tact in guiding her sometimes stubborn clients. After many revision we sorted through a complicated structure developing a design that maintained the older part of the house and included a completely new modern back section of the property that was done in a aesthetically appealing and complementary manner. With our Jane's professional assistance we would never have achiever the result that was finally constructed and certainly not within budget. No one that comes to our house for the first time fails to comment on what a beautiful home it is and is in large part because of Jane. We would have no hesitation recommending Jan and if were to need advice and draws made up for another project Jane would be the first person we would call. Christopher Cody and Desmond Liew

PROJECT MARCH 2014 We have been absolutely delighted by the total experience associated with the design, implementation and in the end, the completion of our remarkable "Hill House”. A day doesn’t go by without a sense of contentment as I smile at some design feature that just makes “sense” or an aspect of how we enjoy living in this space and place – it just “works”! We were absolutely delighted with the experience of designing our house with Mihaly Slocombe. The project is true to the importance we place on environmental sustainability, aesthetics and the clever use of amenity. In the end, the integrity of the creative design is a source of enduring pleasure to us. UPDATED JULY 2016 As our family expanded to the next generation [of grandchildren], we decided to return to the Architects who designed our family home, to create a suitable extension. The brief had been to create something complimentary to the existing design, be playful, functional, environmentally efficient and still aesthetically compatible with the existing home. To our immense delight, despite the obvious challenges and complexity to meet all aspects of the brief, all our expectations were not only met – but superbly exceeded. The project was implemented with a deft efficiency and professionalism and remained on budget and true to brief. What more could we ask for? Whilst I can’t imagine a further extension being required – if it was, I know exactly where I’d go!
Taylor Knights
Richmond, Victoria Architects
25August,2015
I recently designed a front and rear landscape for a Balaclava project designed by Taylor Knights. I saw the house before the major renovation which was a fairly standard Edwardian with little space to extend beyond the existing footprint without diminishing the much needed outdoor areas. I thought this would be tough to achieve anything special. How wrong I was! Not only have they created extremely livable and open interior spaces filled with light, plus a private upstairs suite but it’s their considered choices using off the shelf cost effective materials in unexpected ways, that sets these guys apart. Wainscoting and standard pegboard by way of example, become jewels when handled with such care and without blowing the budget. Sure, there are some architectural tricks you’d expect from a young architectural firm, but they don’t take over and create unique textures that are very easy to live with. For me, the test of great design is when you look at the finished project and if you are not too sure what year it was completed then that’s a mark of great architects. They have achieved a ‘timeless’ outcome, which takes real skill and is why I would highly recommend Taylor Knights for a renovation or new residential build. Urban Creative Studio
Richmond, Victoria Architects
24April,2018
I engaged Andrew and Urban Creative after meeting with four architect firms. I chose Urban Creative as Andrew soon demonstrated his knowledge, flexibility and ability to design the property we desired on a site with a number of constraints and within a tight budget. Urban Creative provided all planning and architecture services from a feasibility study through to construction supervision. The planning process was very smooth and Andrew managed subcontractors (geotechnical, structural, traffic consultants etc.) to maximise efficiencies and ensure the desired outcome. I would highly recommend Andrew and Urban Creative.
Rebecca Naughtin Architect
Richmond, Victoria Architects
10July,2014
Rebecca was the architect and site manager for a substantial renovation to our house in Moor Street Fitzroy. The house, which had been converted in a very haphazard fashion into 3 apartments 30-40 years previously had great bones but needed considerable and skilled renovation to return it to its former glory as a family home. The building had a long and chequered history, including as a boarding house where Weary Dunlop lived as a student. We were keen that we retained the unique character and feel of the house and made maximal use of its position, natural light and views over Fitzroy Town Hall. Rebecca was a joy and inspiration to work with from the outset. She was innovative, rigorous, and listened carefully to our suggestions, especially around environmental impact and overall feel of the property. She was incredibly resourceful in sourcing products and ideas, which made a huge difference to the final design. For example, the suspended cupboards in the kitchen – a real winner given the relatively small size for storage – came from a 1950s design magazine. She managed the project meticulously all the way through, and worked extremely well with the builders and other contractors, who clearly respected her professionalism and skill. This was not an easy project – the house had been renovated repeatedly over the years and the legacy meant no wall was straight and no two doors the same size. The final renovation is superb – understated but spectacular. We haven’t had a visitor who hasn’t been amazed by the house and renovation. I’ve lived in over 40 houses and flats in the last 30 years and this is undoubtedly the best house yet. This is partly due to the original structure but also because of the renovation; I’m sure a less skilled architect could easily have made a dog’s dinner of the project. Rebecca also clearly has an aptitude and commitment to teaching and I know that she is heavily engaged in community and voluntary work in Australia and overseas.
