You may be able to seat less at a tulip table and if you can live with that go for it. It would look great with your striped rug. Clear acrylic chairs would look good such as the IKEA Tobias but I would go for white solid or a mix of grey, white and black.

Hi Gab B! As a mum myself I totally get the practical side of NOT having a rug while juggling the floor-scratching issue! As a designer, I LURVE rugs under dining tables - they zone it yes, they ground it, they add visual interest (colour, pattern, texture)etc etc, but the obvious down side is how to keep it clean. So, here are a number of options to consider - none of which are the silver bullet (in my humble opinion) as you'll still have to manage spills. You could go: 1) sisal - just make sure you clean spills as soon as they happen and ensure the rug supplier provides a cleaning kit 2) a woven PET indoor outdoor rug. Not plush but at least you can take it outside and hose it down! 3) an indoor outdoor plush pile rug. May stain, but soft under foot. Not terribly expensive so a good short term solution 4) short pile conventional rug in a dark colour/pattern. Hides a number of sins, relatively easy to clean (eg using Mr Rug Dr). Nice under foot. 5) Use floor paint to suggest a rug! Hope that's a help! Let us know how you go ;-)

Google Annie Sloan Chalk Paint. It's the best chalk paint. Just wondering...why are you actually wanting to renovate the table - is it in bad condition that we can't see? I agree it needs to stay a dark colour. To be honest, I would leave the table as is and spend the money on some drapes for the windows. At the moment it all looks a bit stark, but that's just my opinion from what we can see in the pic.
