Does my kitchen HAVE to have a rangehood?
Comments (24)Hello, Sorry in advance to bring up an old thread/subject, However looking for any additional advice/direction i can get on comment from midesign0401 below... mldesign0401 In Victoria a range hood is a requirement in new kitchens. No longer is it acceptable for a simple exhaust unit, rather it must now be ducted to external air. So your range hood must be flued either through your roof space or via a horizontal duct to an external wall. It must be installed and signed off, and your house insurance will require your sign off document if your house insurance is to cover damage due to fire, or you will find yourself in a predicament. The provision for installing a range hood above a gas cooktop is a minimum placement of 650mm above your cooktop, and 605 for an electric hob. Including induction. Hope this helps. Our new home got handed over to us by builder just before Christmas (21/12/2018), We are still waiting for under mount rangehood to be installed into our kitchen, The house was delivered with no rangehood as the hole they provided was to close to accommodate rangehood selection, After a couple of visits we have been told that cupboards are to be removed and replaced, Which we are still waiting for as the 'cabinetmaker is very busy', My inquiry is to see whether there is a building code reference/link I can forward on to them to hurry the process up, Also concerned that insurance would not cover our new house if there happened to be a fire Thanks in advance, We look forward o nay help, Regards, Ken and Nadia Buxton...See MoreIs having a prep sink on the island a good idea?
Comments (29)Different strokes for different folks, as they say. We have a butlers pantry, smallish, with a sink in it. The pantry has become effectively a walk-in pantry, with storage, a wine fridge and the toaster and microwave. It's very useful, but we almost never use the sink because there isn't enough practical counterspace and because, well, who wants to do dishes in a closet? We also have an island, with a single basin sink in it, and of course the dishwasher. That's where we do prep, and it works just fine for us. We can watch TV while pealing spuds or washing those dishes that don't go into the dishwasher. Even with the sink, there's still plenty of prep space, and we have a good work triangle between sink, oven on the wall directly behind it, and fridge, oven and pantry on the end wall. In practical terms, the arrangement works for us. When we entertain, we clean up and load the dishwasher as we go, dump the pots and pans in the butler's pantry, wipe off the bench, and we're good to go. And since it's only a single basin undermount sink, the look is clean enough for us....See MoreHow can I have a tap and pressure pump connected to my water tank?
Comments (4)Most country homes have water tanks with electric pumps to push the water into the home. They are “on” all the time, but only pump when the tap/shower/dishwasher etc is turned on, to keep the pressure in the system. Talk to a local plumber, they should be able to find a pump suitable for your tank and the water pressure you need....See MoreKitchen island advice size
Comments (8)My island is 3500mm x 950mm. With a 300mm overhang. I also do not have any stools at my island because our eight seater dining table is adjacent to island. I have my double sink with drainer, and plenty of bench space, because of bench length. So works for me. As oklouise has mentioned, measurements of your kitchen will dictate how big your island is. A 1200 deep island would require you to walk completely around it to clean, unless your 6 foot five. You have also said, in one of your initial posts, that you never eat at a dining table, so maybe you need a deeper bench. But, I would like to think that once you finally renovate your home, you will have family meals around an actual table....See MoreUser
