Need help with pergola area.

We relocated an old shed which left a concrete slab beside our house. We had a carport built which can be seen in the photo but we plan to take it down and build a freestanding carport elsewhere. We also had an open pergola built which covers part of the slab. I would like advice of how to tie it all in with the deck at the back of the house and make it a useable space.

Is the carport roof attached to the main roof of the house?
Is there any way that you can get a garden width down the side of the decking/side fence for a screening plant running the full length?
The area could be one long raised area with various pots, vegetable boxes etc, but I feel that you need a divide between the decking and the fence. The next door visible shed should be hidden. You could put lattice the full height to the upper timbers, but a screen plant here would look better.
I think having the steps down the full width of the decking would also look better then the middle area steps. And I would take it around the full decking area. Don't paint any of the timbers as this will lead to ongoing, constant maintenance, unless you are not using external timber.
A Glory vine over the timbers would help to provide summer shade and is fast growing when pruned heavily in winter, or else you could consider Boston ivy.

Thanks for the great thoughts asquithoatley and Damien. I especially like the suggestions that I add a bit of colour and texture with cushions and lamps. I really favour a natural and organic palette, but having largely achieved that, the room just didn't seem to 'pop' in quite the way I'd hoped. Asquithoatley - are you able to give me a source for the red lamp? I really like it. It is funny you mention knitted pillows, as I just took up knitting for the first time in years and I did some for upstairs. They look really good. Maybe I'll get the knitting needles out again! And I'll start looking around at coffee tables. I think you are right. Thanks again to both of you. Isn't this site fantastic?

Thanks for your reply, we definitely need to get some more ventilation happening around the house. The house has concrete paths right around so I imagine that wouldn't help either. The column near the steps is a planter box which I really love but not sure if it will survive if we have to remove the concrete slab.

Thank you for all the ideas. Sometimes you think about something so much you can't see solutions. Like the ideas of umbrellas or awnings. We have 80 mm of the timber beam available to put an awning on. I think they're wider than that.☹️☹️ (There is a bolt in the beam that protrudes 2cm, it's not easily seen in photo as it is painted cream). An awning would need to sit underneath this bolt. The panels are plastic not glass and their track would need to be clear for when we open the pergola up, which we do during summer on long hot spells. We did plant callistemons about 3 -4 m away but they have not grown according to plan...lol I'm thinking the most achievable solution is a cantilevered umbrella. I think we'd need to concrete the base into the ground and remove the pole during winter. The brick area is a play area - netball etc. Any pros or cons to this idea?
