Hi. We were just discussing same option on the weekend. Our solution was......make up a timber frame to cover door ( like a false free standing wall) insulate with batts to reduce heat/ cold/ noise if required and then just gyprock over. You could actually do two false walls so if at a later date you wish to remove just half for whatever reason, it would be easier. These walls could even be on sold at a later date as there is def a demand for similar fit out. For the single door, you could always put cupboards under and then build them in by creating a false bulkhead to hide the roll or move one of the cupboards and construct a built in media cabinet with bulkhead once again to hide the roll. Depends on what budget. An enclosed fish tank? Small water feature? Artificial plants (you can get real looking ones). Add lights to highlight whatever. Or even a reading nook? There's lots of natural light and perhaps add niches for books.

I say go for it as your door is the window to your home. My advice would be to consider the colour of the flecks in your brick to make sure your chosen colour works with it and not to forget about the colour of your roof and window frames. For example I would have loved a red door but it would have looked ghastly with the green roof on my 25 year-old house. Instead I did black with dark grey window frames (which truly just look black) which works to pick up the black in the brick. I added my big pot plants with green foliage and still got a touch of red in the form of an old chair I picked up from an op shop years ago. The entrance is welcoming, attractive and reflects what is waiting inside. Have fun and if your chosen colour isn't quite right do what I did and find a way of incorporating it into the scheme somehow.

Has anybody asked which way it faces to know where the sun is? If this is north and a lovely place to be, actually even if it is not, you pay lots for the land therefore I would think about a high visual block so the front garden can be a social, play, read area: used by the householders. Somewhere on or back from boundary use star posts, large chicken wire, camellias &/or bushy every green shrubs and then plant out the garden with veggies or what ever you like but add a seat or three as well. A main path to front door, a paint job on fascias, gutters, trim and other elements: it would make a practical private oasis. Cheers Margot
