Paint but what colour

Large hall area (double storey) lounge and dining room, at the moment in dismal and dark beige and yellowy cream woodwork. Would it be better to have vivid white woodwork with a off white but not cream walls or would this large type of area suit a light grey without looking like a battleship. Floors are natural stained Cyprus pine. Any ideas?

Do you plan on leaving the banister dark wood or would you paint that the same colour as your trim? I htink white against your floorboards will probably look best.

I'm thinking all wood trim should be white. but the large walls??

The grey on the western wall looks dark and purplish on my monitor. It may come over as too imposing and monolithic on the southern face. If you're sticking with the grey palette then a warmer tone would suit the sandstone better. Does Dulux have a colour palette recommendation that includes your Berkshire White plus a grey? Check online or in store pamphlets. But, for such a big, expensive, and impactful paint job I would actually be tempted to get a colour consultant. You're not just repainting a loungeroom wall if it doesn't work!

Elzermank, that farmhouse looks fantastic! What a nice feature. It's like the farmhouse has 'smart dress shoes' on. :) Thanks for finding an example because I was struggling amidst the mass of images on google images! Portpiro, that was precisely what worried me when the render went on over the red brick... floating house... We had originally planned to use the same colour as the house walls but when I saw the light render I thought I better rethink. Looks like we better go darker.

mischiefdebs has good suggestions. I would clean it up but without losing the natural, rugged look. Change the base and platforms. Don't waste it on cats 'though, put potted plants on the platforms. Definitely don't put it in the garden unless you want it to rot away in no time. Don't despair, it has great potential. ;-)

Ceiling Colour

Depends if you are painting the ceiling yourself,or paying somebody else to paint it. The paint sold as "ceiling white" seems to be stickier and less runny than wall paint. If you are painting it yourself then you will have an easier job, and less mess with ceiling white. The "mattness" of ceiling white also hides any imperfections in a ceiling, whereas any type of shine accents imperefections. There are lots of off-whites and neutrals which look quite heavy, and seem to close the room in when applied to the ceiling. Some developers use the same colours for both walls and ceilings as it is easy just to mask everything up and go for it with a barrel of off-white paint and a spray gun. I guess I can't suggest one good reason to do both walls and ceiling in the same paint... Best of luck Dr Retro of Dr Retro House Calls

I'd definitely do white trims if you want to lighten the space, then if you want to keep it basic and add colour and style with your decor I'd agree with what you are saying, just an off white that's not cream. You could go a pale grey but you might get sick of it! Also greys can look quite blue or brown (depending on the grey you choose) in different light. We used what the paint shop called builders white which is just a slightly off white, not too stark but definitely not cream:)
