We were told that shutters would not fit into our sash windows by an installer - the sills were not deep enough, house built in 50s, I was very disappointed as I love them (shutters) that is. Our windows are deeper than modern windows, I didn't really get it. Have the blinds instead, feel like a cheap alternative and no way are they as stylish and not wanted what I wanted

Absolutely you can mix traditional windows with contemporary window treatments, although I don't think plantations are considered contemporary by any means.
Ordinarily sash windows can have shutters installed over them, however I can see your sill is very narrow given your bottom pane sits forward of the frame.
I can see privacy is no issue, in fact you have a great view and half height windows allow light in and keep peepers out, so I suggest plantation shutters fitted to your French doors, to allow tilt and directional light and a roman blind as the folds of fabric mimic the frames themselves to your corner arrangement.
If they are too fussy for you a standard holland blind, however be creative, you can have a bonded holland which allows for a fabric front bonded to a block out backing, you can ask for a roman fold on the bottom making them look like a roman when rolled almost all up, and dress the window a little better, but Hollands can roll up into the frame and allow for maximum window when wanted.

Thanks for all your comments! I think firstly I will need to get a professional in to see if shutters will even fit on our windows, cos like you mentioned mldesign0401, our sill is very narrow. We were not planning on putting any treatments on our french doors because it faces the backyard and the neighbours cannot see in, so I kinda like to show off the french doors and not cover them at all.
mldesign - your suggestion for putting fabric on the holland blinds is an interesting thought. I was actually considering Roman blinds, if we cannot get shutters, but I feel that they can look quite thick and heavy and I don't like that, even when they are pulled right up, that they still cover a lot of the window.
What do people think about curtains in this area? (though I may need to convince my partner if we were to go down that path, because he hates curtains!).

Are you kidding??? Shutters are beautifully old fashioned!! Look at the country style magazines! I'm building a Victorian era weatherboard cottage with sash windows and external shutters. When shutters are open it looks brilliant from the outside esp if they're a different colour. Where we are renting right now has the best interior blinds ever. They look really nice, the beads are practically unbreakable, and I don't think they're expensive. I'll include a photo of them. So in our new cottage we're going to have external shutters which we'll keep open for "the look" and inside we'll have these blinds. I hate curtains too! AND of course you'll be able to get shutters to fit your windows (my husband's a carpenter). You'll just have to have them custom made that's all, so it may be a bit expensive. Get a local builder out of your local paper to quote it. He'll probably be cheaper! Good luck!

We have shutters on our sash windows. They were installed with a surround so that they sit over the existing frame. I'm really happy with them in terms of look and function. Sorry about the wrong orientation of photo (and overall bad night time quality) but it hopefully shows what I mean by the surround which overcomes the depth concerns

I have same dilemma with the house we are renovating (built 1910), big sash windows but small sill. Sadly it's 250 ks from the city so getting someone in to have a look is not viable. Scottevie's suggestion of a surround is interesting, will explore that option.

Our current house has white aluminium plantation shutters on the outside of the bedroom french doors(that open inwards), they face west so we get intense summer sun and lovely winter sun in afternoons. They adjust the light & temperature beautifully and are an excellent deterrent for 'break-ins'. On hot summer nights we can leave the doors open to catch gully winds and still feel safe.
