Hi Laura, I love the idea of checking your current paint samples ... sounds like something I would do too ;) I think Dulux have a visualiser app/website where you can upload a picture - I think you can select colours from your current photo and it will give you an idea of the best colour match (which might help you determine the paint colours in your current photos) and also do your own make over by selecting colours you like and applying them to your layout - I'm not sure how accurate it is but could be worth a little play to give you a start in which direction to head in?

If this is a cubby house, please do not choose a black roof. The poor children will be roasting inside in summer. Choose a lighter colour. I would be asking how the occupants of the cubby will be lasting in the long hot summer not the colorbond roof.

Can a colorbond roof ever look good on a clinker brick home? Or will we go straight to design hell? The context: My husband and I have recently purchased a 1930s clinker brick home in Reservoir, Melbourne. It's quite unadorned with a couple of art deco-ish features inside. We've found out that the roof needs a full renovation, which will cost quite a bit of money. It appears that the cost of a brand new colorbond roof will be a bit less. Look, we know it's not the most period-appropriate choice. The house is in an area with many similar homes, and despite driving down every street, we can't find a single house with a brick+colorbond combo. Should we take this as a sign that it will look crap? Or is there an example out there that we haven't even considered, where the colorbond roof and bricks sing together in harmony? (Google street view photo attached as we haven't settled yet and don't have proper pics.) Thanks for your feedback. Be brutal, we can take it!

Colorbond will look handsome on that home. If it were possible to repair the roof and retain the tiles I'd do it. But if budget does not allow then sure a tin roof will be fine also. Australia has a long and proud historical use of tin. I live in a heritage town, every house in it from 1880's right down to 1960's has a tin roof, including many homes of that era. If that house were weatherboard built in the exact same year, it would have a tin roof anyway. I'm a history fan, I'm a preservation freak, but sometimes practicality needs to take centre stage and that is exactly what the people who built the house would have chosen had their budget not allowed the tile. For my money, given the lovely colouring of your brick I would go with a Jasper roof, that nice bronze with pick up the detail of your brick and look good and also work with the existing trim. Another thing you can do to avoid the cheap roof look is choose a different profile to the tin. This roof is the same pitch as yours on a similarly proportioned building. The profile however is what makes it look more heritage than a standard corrugation. Not sure if BHP do this profile but I'm pretty sure that Lysaght do. The one thing I would be careful not to do however, is change the pitch of the roof if the trusses also need to be replaced. It's pitch is an essential character of that home and are necessary for right proportion.
