1970s/80s bathroom makeover on the cheap?
Comments (20)I would definitely keep your taps and sink, but replace/go over the top of the bench top! It would be nice to price replacing that shower door - change to a frameless or semi frameless piece of glass. Change out all towel rails and such wall fixtures - you can get good chrome looking budget ones at Bunnings that will last three years. Personally, I would definitely paint the vanity doors white gloss - a 2-pak look. You might find the only available options for going over your current floor (other than tiles), are pretty ugly and I wouldn't trust tile paint on the floor it has been known to wear badly. If you don't mind a very small step up into the bathroom, you can tile straight over the top of those tiles, Go to a tile outlet place and you will get very nice tiles in the small quantity you need for less than $100, and the tiling job shouldn't take long or cost much. I have done exactly that myself and I would look into that if you really hate the floor tiles. If the wall tiles are cream and not white, I would paint them with white tile paint. If you do change the floor at all, I would get tile paint in a similar tone - say a stone or grey colour or something similar to the floor colour you go with and use that tile paint to paint carefully over the dark brown stripes in those wall tiles - or better still - try white tile paint over them first and see how they look. I would definitely be painting all that mission brown trim and the inside of the door white if it were me as it will modernise and freshen the space right up, but if you really want to stick to a timber stain, then yes, I would go much lighter than it currently is. Definitely paint the vanity doors in my opinion though if you want to update the whole look in there. Would be best to get rid of that piece of timber between the shower and the door too! That's just me though! Best of luck with it!...See MoreThrifty bathroom renovation ideas?
Comments (21)Keep your expenses as minimal as possible and save for the total renovation. I really like the tiles too, they are a very pretty soft colour and I like blue in bathrooms. As chinlin said, just work on the grout and freshen that up. You can buy pens that make whitening grout very simple. I would either paint the walls the same colour or a very sharp white and give the ceiling a new coat of white to freshen the room up. Love the shower curtain, it is a keeper. Glass screens are not cheap and if you can't reuse it when you renovate is it a waste of money. Definitely the basin is one area worth spending money on, and I think the Ikea vanity Winston posted will fit the bill perfectly and give you some much needed storage. You could add a simple glass shelf above it for toothbrushes and such. It doesn't look like you have a mirror in the bathroom so a mirrored shaving cabinet would be a must. They are taller than what you have now, so would give you more storage as well. I've noticed there is a trend these days to using the top of these cabinets for storing extra rolls of toilet paper. It looks neat and would eliminate the basket on the floor. I would also purchase a rubbish bin with a swing lid - little things like this help give a room a neater and less cluttered look and help add a bit of style to a room....See MoreBathroom Update Before & After

Comments (15)The colour downstairs is okay , but the upstairs work so far almost looks like a waste IMO . Not much has changed , except some black fittings . Yes , I know , the vanities are new and the basin is a different shape -- stuff you'd almost miss if you didn't know . You have old style bath , old style tiles , old style glass or plastic panel , with old style pink frames . At the very least , I'd change the glass and frame and basically anything that looks old , and you pretty much have to go with a black or charcoal frame and tinted glass . From the tiles up , white walls . A black framed mirror . A nice feature light or downlights . A couple of potplants in colourful glazed pots . Pick a colour , and go with it . So the pots , towels , liquid soap dispensers , toothbrush holders , bathmat , even the shaver on the wall -- all in green or yellow or red or something you like -- black will get boring real quick IMO , but also keep away from white accessories -- that would be too much !...See Morektmont
