Advice about leather sofas

Hi,

I'm currently furniture shopping for my lounge room. My partner and I have decided we want a combination of sofas or a sofa and reclining chairs. We want the sofa(s) to have recliners in them and would like the material to be leather. It's been almost 20 years since we bought our last leather lounge set, which was made in Australia by Pegar. This set will be placed in another room, as it is still in good condition.

After visiting a store today we are a bit confused about the terminology used nowadays in reference to leather. We saw something interesting at Nick Scali today, but later discovered many negative comments relating to the quality of leather used by Nick Scali.

Can anyone help with a concise description of what to look for or avoid when wanting to buy quality leather furniture to last many years?

Not sure about their leather, but I too have heard not so great reports on Nick Scali... make sure you also get a sturdy frame... I was told once that you should be able to lift say a 3-seater from one corner without feeling like the couch is loosing its balance to the other side, this generally indicates a solid base frame... as for leather couches with recliners, not sure what your budget is, but try Plush Furniture or Domayne... if budget is no object, then have a look at King Furniture

Thanks for your reply. After shopping around quite a bit yesterday and feeling like we've visited almost every furniture showroom, we returned to one of the first shops we visited and have placed an order. In the end, the Nick Scali set we saw would have been too big for our lounge room and we weren't keen on a modular sofa for the room. What we've ordered works better in our space and I think we are more comfortable with the decision than had we ordered the Nick Scali furniture.

Definitely start with a rug. I don't know what your style is so can't make specific rug suggestion. But, I would take advantage of this neutral palette to choose a rug with a design and colors I love, then add pillows and accessories repeating those colors. Make sure the rug is large enough to be in scale with the sofa. The sofa has pretty hard lines, you might consider a round ottoman out of fabric. Above the sofa you could do artwork in graphic black and white, or color. Don't worry about everything matching. I am a believer that artwork is chosen because you love the piece. It should stand out in the room if you made the decision to invest in something. Check out local colleges the art department has several sales during the year of student art; especially around this time of year. Once you have the rug and ottoman add some chairs for additional seating. Enjoy and have fun.

Hi Blufitch, Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. The four coffee tables are lovely, but I would probably opt for one of the two top ones. That being said, check the measurements first as these round tables might be significantly larger than your existing Ikea table. Re the potted plant, a taller one would be better, or you can put this one on a plant stand or even on a ceramic stool. But if you feel a mirror would be too much due to your mirrored splashback, leave the plant as it is and hang a framed print above the plant. It doesn't need to be big, but it's important that it s not too small so it doesn't look too "lost" on the wall. It's hard for me to judge the size from here, but a 70x40 frame might be ok. You could have only the yellow canvas above the couch, but you would have to bring in a few more brightly-coloured cushions or throw onto the couch, to compensate for the empty wall. Alternatively, you could also hang a large mirror above the couch. If you decide to do this, I think it would be best to move the canvas back to where it was, and hang the mirror in front of the window, so it reflects the natural light around and gives more depth to the room. The large Ikea Stave mirror (in white stained oak) is very reasonably priced and would work great. Just double check it fits first (it's 70x160)! Tell us how yo go! Debbie, if you don't need a lamp for reading then don't bother. I think if you can find a taller plant stand and place a taller plant (fiddle fig?) in it, then place it behind your current plant, that's all the height you might want in the corner. A fig would work well as it gets along fine in indirect sunlight. Your coffee table is perfect! Don't change it.

We bought ours at Mile End Homemaker centre, not sure of the shop name or even if it is still there, but it was near Beacon Lighting , and there are a few shops there that might have what you want, mostly mid price range.

Hi thinkoutsidethe box, I am just in the process of writing a Houzz story about choosing a leather sofa! Bad timing as you have already made a choice. Great that you got 20 years out of your old suite though, it must have been a great quality buy.

It is a bit confusing when it comes to leather - there's terminology like "aniline" and "natural grain bovine" ...which can make sofa shopping even more frustrating.
