Carpet and wall colour selection

We are currently building a house and I have selected a very dark grey for the carpet upstairs which will be for the bedrooms and tv/lounge room. They walls are a light grey and ceiling/doors/skirting etc are all white. Do you think very dark grey is a bad choice and will make the upstairs feel dark and pokey? Im not sure how much light will be up there till the house is built so its making my decision a difficult on. Thoughts please ?!?!

With dark grey floors and light grey walls, I'm not sure how "light and bright" the rooms will feel.

Would you consider keeping the dark grey floors, but going with a warm white colour for the walls?

Alternatively, if you want to keep the light grey walls, perhaps you could find a beige carpet which has some "flecks" of grey throughout it?

I would recommend looking at a LOT of display homes (and open homes) to see what colour combination appeals to you most. If you're really concerned about lighting, then maybe double check your windows to see if you want to increase the size of any of them or potentially include some more windows. Similarly, you could review your electrical plan to ensure that you'll have plenty of lighting (or power points for additional lighting if required).

Hi. I disagree with the previous comment (sorry!). Wall colour can be easily changed whenever you like but floors are a much bigger challenge and need careful consideration. I am a fan of light floors and am living in a house that has them, and am also renovating a house that will have them. If you choose something with a warmer base (taupe/beige is fine but not yellow) it will carry you through any changes to the wall colour you might want to make in the future. Go for it! Good luck.

I've just been looking at your colours, I think the Dulux Dieskau would work the best with the other colours you have to work with, choosing colours is such a personal thing and I know it can be really hard to choose and hope you make the correct choice. Oskuee is right, a paint job can look terrible half way through so you need to make sure you finish to get the proper look of colour. But the biggest thing to remember is it's only paint and it's the cheapest thing to change so if your not happy with the colour you choose you can always try something else. Happy redecorating :)

You need to choose a colour that pleases you but the inside wall of that alcove does lend itself to a feature. If you want more than just paint colour there are paintable wallpapers that add an embossed look to a wall and you paint over that. Check out Bunnings.

I work in tiles and the normal splashback height is 600 mm. This is because overhead cupboards are usually this height above the bench top. In your case you don't have this so can do anything you like. If you tile to low 200mm etc the wall gets damaged - paint doesn't wear like tiles. There are many materials you can use as a splash back but most aren't durable eg Perspex. Glass and tiles have the edge. Textured splashes are in hence the hand made tiles. If grout annoys you use large tiles you can get them up to 1200mm long these days with rectified edges you only have 1.5mm gap. Use sealer on the grout, they are now easy clean. If you have the money tile to the bulkhead a much more luxurious look. Maybe in a charcoal. I don't know how these gaps are getting so dirty. I use spray and wipe with a toothbrush occasionally and it takes little time and always clean.

I would recommend a carpet colour that is variegated. We had a very uniform chocolate brown in the bedrooms of our previous home and it showed every little bit of fluff
