The house trim and small picket fence are monument and the back fence is ironstone, thanks!

Spray the monument colour.

Dark fences look amazing, and most landscapers use these colours to help the fenceline recede behind lush green foliage and allow that to be the standout, front and centre. It does impress upon you a false impression of space, being that the boundary is shadowed and devoid of light/colour.

If you are to having planting in front of the fence, you could consider a lighter shade, but my preference is for all fences to be dark like this. Generally speaking they look neat and a single bold colour unifies a mix of materials or elements as in a timber fence with extensions, and looks really classy.

Spraying is much quicker! I'd go the same colour as the house or the area will swamp the house and garden. Happy painting:)

I would paint it in the monument and put plants in front as will give a feeling of infinity

I just had a new side fence put up in Ironstone and added a fence to the house in monument. They blended really well. Yesterday started spraying the back fence with Ironstone and it looks great. The greenery of the shrubs looks so much more accented and the fence looks further away than the o,Der section in river gum. Can't wait to finish it. Hope this helps your decision making. Lyn

The underside and edges of the concrete balconies in "Ironstone" or "Ticking". If you paint the balcony railings in the same colour or black, they will visually disappear and you will be able to see onto the balconies and inside the apartments. By painting the railings in light colours like white, whitish grey, or a light colour similar to the bricks, the street viewer's sight will be stopped at the railing. This will provide a modicum of privacy on the balconies. For the fence, an orange/ochre will tie-in with the apartment's brick colour. i.e. a warm grey with red or ochre tint in it. The pillar crowns and the capping bricks on the wall in Ironstone/Ticking. Or you could just paint the whole fence in Ironstone or Ticking. If graffiti is an issue in the area, dark colours may attract it. My inner city Perth front courtyard rendered brick fence is a burnt orange and has never been graffitied but the gas meter box which is painted Ironstone always gets targetted. To get an idea of the visual effect of colours, look at the two cars parked out the front. You tend to look "at" the white car on the left (a blocking colour), but you look "through" the dark car on the right and it tends to "disappear" from sight.

Renovating a 1970’s brick home and have painted the exterior brickwork Dulux Natural White and a pergola and eaves Dulux Vivid White. Roof and panel lift door on carport are Surfmist. Need help with deciding colours for Scyon Linea cladding, carport cement rendered pillars and new 1800 high timber fence. Hello .. why not grey but not too dark. A neighbour paint their fence (beside a 70's but lovely yellow brick home) a dark grey. I wondered if it might be a little too dark even tho that appears to be the trend. I have too, a 70's yellow brick home and deciding what shade of grey I might paint the paling fence in a courtyard area. I think maroon (trim) and grey would work nicely and it's surprising what a new appearance does for the surroundings. I'm often amazed.

My husband I painted our fibro corrugated fence with big brushes in a monument like colour, once we were into it, it didn't take that long and wasn't that hard (no cutting in). If you have a spray gun use it, but don't buy one especially.

I don't believe we got paint on either of our neighbours fences painting with a brush. Solid fences as opposed to slats or pickets. We see our side neighbours fence from the side walk. Not a drop. Just take care near the top. Other than that you can just slap it on super six fence and we actually used a roller on front and side fence as it is rendered brick. The difference was outstanding

I don't really have any specific photos of the fence but a couple of accidental pics. One though the window of our back as it was being renovated. The other before is of front yard with two different rendered colours before we took to it (no idea what the thought processes going on their would have been)The back fence is darker than front. The back is a generic charcoal fence paint from Bunnings the front is taubmans wistow. The front is still a work in progress. The back is complete but that pic of the fence is before patio and plants went up and in. Our back is about 5.5 metres wide . So very small the dark paint has really helped give a sense of space

Do not paint the fence, it always looks terrible a few years down the track, high maintenance nightmare. Leave it to go it's natural grey and use plants as a beautiful backdrop instead.

Two sides....my fence is painted domino, almost like monument, and is going on ten years. It's a timber fence we sprayed, and still looks great. No touch ups and no flaking paint. I used solarguard so it must do as it claims.

Cheap paints will look unsightly, and need maintenance, otherwise go for it.

I've had zero hassles and plenty of people stop to ask for the colour.

if using a stain use a spray gun as the stain will penetrate deeper into the wood and the colour will last much longer.

No I would put green creepers in this will cover up the fence without standing out too much or some sort of vine that is maintained by you or your gardner to give appeal and character.. Google gor inspo

We oiled our pine lap fence and it looks fabulous. Especially with our red recycled brick and limestone garden borders. Capping is important for longevity so the rain can't warp the wood. We also oiled the neighbors side (with their permission!) so it will last longer.

Don't forget to warn your neighbors if spraying! Our friend sprayed her fence and was very careful with minimizing over spray, but on the neighbors expensive white sheets it still showed up!

Dark fences are an ideal foil for plants, but.............Once you paint you are stuck with painting, so how about staining? This can fade away with dignity if you don't enjoy recoating every few years.

I was always under the impression that painting one side of the fence only would eventually cause the planks to warp.

The neighbours have already stained their side. We did have jasmine and ivy growing on the previous fence and although it did bring lots of lovely foliage to the eye it was not a friend of the fence (maybe jasmine "controlled" on wires???).

We are planning on building a deck out towards the fence that will bring it to 1.4m from the boundary so want to make decision soon before construction starts.

Thanks for all of your suggestions, thoughts and ideas they've been really helpful and thought provoking.

We sprayed and hand painted it, we did the top rail and above by hand to avoid any over spray to the neighbours place. The neighbours haven't mentioned anything about and over spray (thank goodness). Now it's time to work out some plants that can go in the narrow garden beds
