I want to build a custom mosaic bath!

Hi all,

I want to combine a shower and bath together, but can not find a suitable, wide enough (1000mm plus) bath tub to accommodate this. So, I have decided to explore the option of building a custom bath/shower space, tiled in mosaic. Any ideas, suggestions or tradies please that I should consider.

A basic starter job, is to try tiling a placemat(trivet), then a little table top, to get the hang of it. Info is on the Internet, and tile supply stores. One trick is to get sticky book covering, and arrange your tile art design upside down on the sticky side of the plastic.

Thank you, thats a great idea for tiling. I guess I am doing something like a roman bath, and at this stage I need advice on what to actully build it from. It needs to be "light weight" and obviously hold a large amount of water. Anyone know if fibre cement cladding would be suitable?

We had our claw foot bath professionally restored as re surfaced over 20 years ago and I gold leafed the claw foot and shellacked it numerous times it looks fabulous the bath still looks as new today as it did 20 years ago, we looked for a professional re-surfacer of bathrooms to do it, I finished off the claw feet as mentioned, we bought the bath that was being used as a sheep dip on a farm so it was much worse than your bath, we live in Adelaide but I am sure there would be prfessionals in Melbourne, just google and then look for feedback of their work, good luck.

Creating content, visual or written, takes a lot of time. Time is money. I suppose it's hard enough finding the time to do it for your own business, let alone for something else, unless it of course makes sense for obvious benefit/investment. Perhaps you need to put your feelers out for this in the Pro-Pro discussion area and provide some more information about the "deal" so to speak and what you are endeavouring to achieve..................no offence taken, but just to explain a little of my blunt response, particularly for the design sector of this industry, it's a tricky one as to where to draw the line between providing content/time as part of business/service promotion/exposure, or just feeding the digital beast and giving away value/content for nothing........everyone these days just expect that access to info and content are free, which in turn diminishes it's value and increases the pressure on particularly small businesses.......... As siri said, If you post a question on this forum about something specific, a few of us here will typically jump in an offer some considered comments that you could possibly use with approval..... best of luck with your venture moving forward...cheers PD

Always Renovations are always time-consuming, the actual joining of the new build to the existing can't be estimated accurately, until after work has commenced. SPECIFICATIONS of CONTRACT Quality versus Cost.. Completed work 20 + years OR 7 years ( warranty period ) Many times, a reputable tradesman, builder, after submitting a quote, using timber sizes, LVLs concrete MPA he would use in his own home...etc ( with around 27% profit margin ) is confronted with " I will go with Joe Blogs, he is cheaper ", the reputable person knows the cheaper quote will use timber, to minimum sizes, min MPA concrete, minimum standards, longer finish ( cheap has many jobs on at once ) It really depends on whether the homeowners. 1) Check ABN or ACN 2 Check Department of Fair Trading Licence Number, ( if this is not on any correspondence between you and builder, run )

Couple of observations
Lots of mosaic tiles have sharp edges so you need to be very detailed in how you do this.
Have you considered a corner (spayed front) shower bath combo. There are several manufacturers that make these in fibreglass and acrylic materials (some with spa jets also). That way you can consider a shower screen that would be integral.

Thanks for your feedback! Yes I have considered your suggestions, but are not the look I am after. I will get professional tiler for the job.

I once designed a Japanese bath for a client that was built in masonry with mosaic tile covering.
If you have a good tiler they can "roll" the tiles over the top corners to avoid sharp edges.
