Need help with LED downlights

Hi everyone,
There is so much of material out there on the net about LED downlights...
We are building 2 storey house (Ground floor living = 197 sq m and first floor living = 188 sq m) with a void in entry area (3.5 m x 2 m) and a void in family area - 4 m x 3.5 m - The rest - ceiling height is: 2.7 m ground floor and 2.7 m upper floor.
I need your help with following:
1) How many Watt? of LED downlights to go with?
2) How many lumens are sufficient?
3) What beam angle?
4) To go with Warm white? OR Cool day-light? (My wife and I personally like cool daylight).
We prefer brushed / satin chrome finish.

Please help!!!

We supply and Install LED downlights, do complete wiring on the plan, based on the detail information which you have provide we can design the downlights, LED Pendants, Fans, Switches, Wall lamps, LED bathroom Heaters, Outside Wall lamps, Kitchen lights and even the Smart LED Desk Lamp.

2.7 meter Ceiling :

1) I will recommend 10W LED downlights to go with.

2) Lumens between 800lm - 950lm

3) Bean angle should be 120°

4) We can recommend the color (Warm white/ Day white / Cool white) based on the color and decor of the house and also on what it is used for (eg:- for Dinning area Warm white is the best as it enhances the texture of the food)

5) The cover you can get in Stain or brushed chrome finish as you like.

It's also worth understanding CRI when choosing LED lighting... here's a blog post explaining CRI - most products should list this on their specifications.

Can't give you the technical side of things, but we are about to pretty much do the same thing in the same sized room. We are going with two separate sets of 4 LEDs - one in living, one in dining, so 8 lights altogether. We're going to have both sets on dimmers so we can adjust the level of lighting if/when required and independently of each other. Both our electrician and an in-home Beacon Lighting consultation agreed this would be adequate and a dramatic improvement on the poor light quality the oysters currently provide. Only other tips i can pass on is that if you're also upgrading any lights in adjacent spaces, make sure you use same light colour of LEDs - generally best to stick with warm white - and don't get too many LEDs - have seen many examples where people have put in heaps and then felt the ceiling looks like a runway!!

If you go for down lights you will need to leave a gap around them of 100 mm between the recessed part and insulation so the insulation doesn't catch on fire. This also creates a problem with the thermal performance of your home because heat can move freely through the ceiling where there is no insulation. It can make a big difference even if there are only a few down lights. Also, down lights are very directional (send most of their light straight down) so you need to put more in to get the same effect. You could try track lights that attach to the ceiling instead. If you want a pendant go for something cheap and easy to replace if it is damaged by toys/clothes or whatever being thrown around. Ikea have lots. FYI dimmers don;t educe the power consumption, merely reduce the intensity of the light.

Hi Elizabeth, These days LED down lights come as one unit and globes can not be replaced, the entire unit will need to be replaced. However as prices are coming down all the time this shouldn't be an issue. As the new lights just plug into an socket, they are simple to replace without the need of an electrician. Otherwise you use the old fittings and purchase new reflectors, however please be aware that these reflectors are not as bright. Hope this helps, MKG

Trent, I also thought, depends on the colour cabinets and paint choices in room. My room has white cabinets, therefore the light is reflected around the room. If you are having, for example, dark wooden/laminate kitchen cabinets, or dark wooden floors, then you would need the lighting you have. But my overall thought, is you have maybe three too many LED,s.
