I'm guessing that if there rentals, they not be induction, most rentals use the cheap electric cook tops.
Electric cook tops are not really that great, they are hard to control the heat but as a landlord they are cheap, easy to clean and they work.
Induction is a totally different thing, more costly than gas.
Instant heat that heats the pan only, you can turn it off and actually touch it immediately.
Bit hard to explain, maybe check them out at Harvey Norman.
Think it's a personal preference between gas or induction. Personally, I prefer gas.

@Tilly That's totally right. I've used an electric cooktop in the past and I hate them. I've also used inductions in my previous apartment and they're good, though I still prefer cooking on a flame. This one looked like an induction when I saw it, but I can't thank you enough for reminding me about electrics. I need to double check, because if it is electric, it's a definite deal breaker.

@whynottryit You've just addressed all my concerns. There is a lovely large balcony as well as a little garden, so the bbq would be outside. But those propane cylinders look scary. I might just make my peace with induction cooktops if there's no gas line available.

I think I'd go that route. Plus, if you are renting, the landlord (and their insurance company) may have requirements regarding what you can do. I've been renting the same apartment for the last 12 years. Just a few years ago, the new owners (third since I've been here) informed us that grills could no longer be kept on upper balconies and had to be moved to ground level. They couldn't even be stored on the upper levels. Their insurance company insisted this be done. I would certainly check with the owners to see if there are any limitations before you even put a grill on your balcony. I was surprised after so many years without that issue but I think there had been a fire on a ground floor patio and then it affected everyone. C'est la vie.

@whynottryit Good idea. The current tenants did have a big grill on the balcony, but I should check if the owners are keen to change any clauses on their lease agreements. Thanks for the tip!

Most welcome. I've seen both sides of this coin since my parents rented several houses throughout the years. One way to really set yourself up as a special tenant is to treat the apartment as though you owned it and keep the landlord's maintenance at a minimum. I've managed to sneak through several rent increases because I am a "model" tenant. I always make friends with the new owners and let them know I understand their issues and I do everything I can to maintain the property without bothering them more than necessary. My dad actually had one tenant that called every time a light bulb blew out. Not a model tenant. :)
