Gotta agree with karen above. It's a nice unit but looks a little out of place.

I had similar floors in my previous house and it was difficult to match timbers. Is that why you plan to paint the sideboard white? Safe choice.

An extending table would be ideal but i think you have enough space to walk easily around that size table.

Also, something like this would look great against that wall...

Thanks for the feedback. Luke, I love the retro piece, but my husband would never go for it (that's if I could even find one). I'm now thinking of ditching the sideboard and just going with a large artwork - any thoughts? Also what do you think of the oak table I initially posted with the DSW chairs? I agree with the above comments about the Eames chairs.

Yes they've been done to death but they've already been around for decades. Became more popular in last few years due to the cheap knock-offs.

I purchased genuine Eames chairs second from Ebay, etc.. They are surprisingly different to a knock-off. They are something that we'll have for decades due to their superior quality and iconic design that goes with almost any design style.

The cheapo ones other's have purchased will all be thrown out in a couple more years as they'll be broken and have zero value so not worth repairing....more landfill!

A rustic refractory table goes with almost anything as do timber bench seats. The classic Thonet chairs never date either.

Although budget is a consideration, aim for a quality item that you'll have for years and years, even though it stings the wallet.

I'm going with the oak table, and the DSW (Replica's unfortunately - but I've found some with steel posts between beach legs, which will be stronger than the aluminium I imagine)and a massive artwork (yet to be chosen - although I do love the orange Growler by Adam Cullen)...... I'd like an original painting, but cost is a factor - still have half a house to decorate! Guess I'll see how I go!

As no one discussed whether the size of the table was correct, I thought I would throw in a few tips...

1. The table should be placed a minimum of a metre away from the walls (or buffet) so that when someone is sitting down, a person can easily get behind this person to sit down at the next chair.

2. Allow 0.5m within the alignment of a passageway, so that people aren't encroaching onto the passageway when seated. Also so the furniture is not jutting out visually into the hallway.

3. You need to allow for comfortable passage beside the island bench through to the back door.

From the plan shown, all this will work.

To know whether the table will fit and where it should be placed. It is best to mark out the position of the table on the floor and then put chairs up to this so you can imagine where the chairs will be in relation to the space (both when in use and pushed in).

Better still, so you can fully visualise the volume the table takes up, get a smaller table and cut up a cardboard to the right size and put it on top.
