Definitely add a rug with some pattern and texture to break up the conglomerate of dark colours both with the tiled floor and chocolate modular lounge. The rug you choose will then dictate what scatter cushions to select for your lounge. You may want to consider asking your landlord if a art hanging track can be installed this way you could hang a lovely print or artwork behind sofa. With an art track it is usually powder coated white and installed just below cornice and looks like part of the cornice. You are then given by the installer acrylic hanging wires that slot into this track making it versatile to hang either a series of smaller prints or one large one and you can change as often as you like without any damage to the walls. Your artwork can also be the basis for selecting a rug and scatters. You will be amazed how by adding the rug, scatters and artwork will give instant warmth and personality to your room. You may also want to add a coffee table too. If it is a particularly beautifully patterned rug that is a real feature think of a glass coffee table so the rug can be seen. I envy your wall space, I wish we had more! What has worked really well for us is using empty walls as our "brag" board. Do you have particular interests you love talking about? Putting something up about your family, a favourite subject, pet or holiday could be a great talking point. Our visitors get drawn to our fishing photos, where we caught the fish (Botswana/Amazon) and the type (Tiger fish/Peacock Bass). Although the photo print (size A0) could be printed really cheaply (~$50) at somewhere like Officeworks, I discovered that the frames (~$440 each) were the biggest expense. However, as we know we only needed to print a new A0 sized photo in the future, spending money on good, customised frames is worthwhile. We have also now tried printing our favourite shots on stretched canvas (~$100). The product gets delivered, usually in a week, ready for hanging much quicker than ordering a custom made frame ;) Smaller canvases range from twenty dollars to about a hundred. Do you regularly dine at the dining table? If you more frequently eat in front of the TV, then I would consider using the "media room" space as the "formal" dining area and including generous and comfortable seating in the living/dining space to create a spacious, free-flowing lounging area. That would ensure that there is plenty of room for movement around the kitchen and to the balcony. The location of the TV would probably depend upon the antenna and power points, but unless you have an awesome view off the balcony, it seems like the back of the sofa/s would need be to the balcony so that they face the TV. With only two bedrooms, I'm not sure that two separate "living" rooms are required. As an alternative, if you really don't use a dining table (or if you would prefer to have a nice outdoor dining setting on the large balcony), then I would consider using the media room space as a study/library. It could be somewhere for a combination desk/console table (for your keys, mail, etc) and bookcases or other storage requirements. I would consider how you use your current living space, including how you entertain. I would also think about just moving in with the bare minimum of furniture and slowly furnishing the apartment once you have a better idea of the space, how you move about it and how you want to live in it on a day to day basis. Hi Marta, Nice place you've got there :) First of all, it would help us to help you if you give us some ideas on what type of style interests you - Scandi, traditional, modern, tropical or industrial etc. Post some photos of interior you that you like. Also your lifestyle will be a major factor. e.g do you have kids, dog, busy life style, likes to entertain etc. In my opinion, the rug is too small & the couch is over-sized yet small - it would look nice stretched out, if that makes sense. If you are not looking to replace the couch, move the futon to one of the ends of the couch instead of opposing it to open up the space & create elongated look. But the rug definitely need to go. Go for something big to compensate the size of the couch & highlight the nice large space you've got there. Also, I would not place my couch blocking a window - move it away so you can actually enjoy the view and also so sections of your couch doesn't fade by being exposed to sunlight. In terms of injecting colour, i wouldn't go crazy buying too many colourful furnitures - generally colours are very easy to introduce once you have nice key pieces that go together and show your personality. Focus on the big pieces and the arrangements and then move on to smaller/ decorative items. In your kitchen, I think little bit softness & curve could be introduced as it is very linear and angular, so maybe this type of bar stool?
