What style/period is this house?
Comments (62)Thanks for the comments. To give an idea we looked at what we needed to do as the house is 30 years old and the kitchen appliances had all started to fail, cabinets falling apart, flooring damaged (only lino most of it) and bathrooms had cracked or chipped tiles etc. The previous original owners were also over 80 when they sold and couldn’t see the work required, in their eyes it was still fantastic. We realised we could easily spend enough to go into the low 100s k, so decided to do more, take it further and go over 150k so we could apply for the 25k grant which we did before new year. This mainly included more electrical work, a Zip tap and the skylight than the general wet areas. The builder gave us a ”mid-upper” range budget when we signed up which helped with tile selection and cabinet handles etc (not top end at all) and we have been pretty disciplined to keep the variations to a minimum (less than 10%). It helped doing the double glazing and buying new appliances ourselves this was cheaper. After getting the grant back we will be under 200k, but installing double glazing around the whole house wasnt cheap, this cost about 30 alone....See MoreWhat style is my mum?
Comments (6)It is important to remember that houses evolve. Just because a date is put on the beginning and end of a style period doesn't mean that the house will have ONLY the features of that period. It could be possible that an owner or builder enjoyed certain features and incorporated them into a later house. Evolution is a process of trial and error!!...See MoreWhat style should I stage my home?

Comments (6)To be honest I think you're better off looking at the style of house you have. Deciding what you like about it and finding a style which suits that kind of house. I'm not a huge fan of Hamptons but if I lived in a Queenslander or just a weatherboard cottage in a regional area that's probably what I would choose. My current house is 1960s and so better lends itself to modernist but our extension is quite contemporary and has been styled to match. Previously I lived in a federation house and my decor was different again. My other tip is to look at your wardrobe and at outfits you really love and why they work. I think this gives you a good idea of colour schemes and styles which would suit you. I'm no interior expert but you can then find pictures you like and build up on Houzz or Pinterest. You don't really need a name as such as this just becomes marketing. For example Kate Walker Design's KWD demonstrates some different design styles but I like most of them equally and would again make choices based on location and the style of house. Sometimes it's easier to simply rule out what you don't like (for me that is primary colours and shiny surfaces)...See Morebarry grath
