Love, love, love chandeliers when they are used tastefully. Have used them in conjunction with coastal/country style home, timber floors and dados, huge recycled timber table to seat twelve (casual form or bench seats) with two crystal chandeliers above. What is not timber, is painted off white. The living room is again timber and off white, with white leather furniture, open fire place and a huge central crystal chandelier.......but certainly not formal.

You can certainly fit a cluster in this space, the drama is in the staggered ceiling heights, not just the width and spacing of the pendants themselves. I wouldn't add any niches for decorative items as they are a bit dated, look a bit busy, and are hard to find anything that is shallow enough and tall enough to look any good. They were common in project homes of the 1990's but are well past their use-by date. You haven't mentioned the size of your chandeliers, however with the height of your ceilings they can't be too low. I would suggest hanging one over the centre of the dining table so that when seated the chandelier does not interrupt your line of sight across the table. This will allow for a decent size chandelier that you won't walk into. The second one I would add to the corner of the upstairs rumpus room , directly above the corner table in the plan. This will illuminate the stairs, but still be easy to access to change bulbs. It can be a similar height to the one in the dining room and its location will mean that people won't walk into it. Don't hang your chandelier above your stairwell as they do need maintenance for regular cleaning and changing bulbs, and they are hard to reach over stairs. Don't hang your chandeleir in the front living room as it is an unusual informal shape with the integration of the entrance hall and it will always look off-centre.
