I personally have a thing about some of these square alfresco areas as the are usually very tight and squished when trying to use them, and eat into the interior floor plan, so the following suggestions. A long alfresco across the full width of the north facing family kitchen, catering to any future pool. Out door kitchen continuing as an extension to the kitchen, WIP which could have tall nib walls with a high set window above the bench for light and to control the westerly sun. An IT desk for the family to use Large open plan with fireplace. The powder room moved further to the rear of the house and into the laundry space, is better access for family room, play/guestroom and THE future pool Walk in linen storage and store next to the stairs for easy linen access for these 1st floor bedrooms

retain the second living area, better resale value as more rooms and you will find it more useful the longer you stay. until the children are in primary school they will want to be in the same living room as you so they will play out in the back living area but over time you will be happy to have a separate play room full of toys you dont have to look at constantly while in the kitchen. I would definetely put both children in 1 room for at least 5 years then you will have another room that could become a third adult sitting/reading area. courtyards let in light and could almost become the second living room, or could turn out to look neglected with dead plants and somewhere you have to sweep up all the time its windy?

How do you know that the hallway would of been through the middle of the home. A lot of California bungalows had the bathroom directly in line with the front door. Standard four front rooms, consisting of two bedrooms, lounge and kitchen with table in the middle of the kitchen. I remember growing up with my grandparents having exactly that. There home was built in 1932 the similar period as yours. So I don’t think the owners botched the extension, they just utilised the existing bathroom as a WIR, and installed all new plumbing in the new rear extension. It would of been a cheaper option. With the fireplace in your master bedroom in the room on the back left, that would of been the kitchen/diner. This plan is an original home currently for sale, which has not changed since built in 1930, it still does not have an inside toilet.
