I'm keeping the chairs original as they are pure wool. Yes, I'm thinking lighter floors and I will either paint the book shelves in the Island bench white or charcoal (see third picture) I'm thinking some open shelves in light wood and timber lights too. I'll post some pics of inspiration. Until we knock the wall out, I'm a bit stuck to do any more. It's still just a work in progress at the moment

I'd agree with adding darker colours to the mix... if reupholstering things is not in the budget just by adding chocolate, charcoal or navy blue to the chair and bedding will help. Add some rougher textures, chunky knits, pin stripes, vintage linen and right on trend velvet.... A bold feature wall could give some mood to the room again in the above colours.

Nice chairs. Have you browsed the Temple and Webster site. Lots of dining chairs. I'm a magazine tragic but I don't recall these chairs having a distinctive name. They look slightly like Eames copies but not exactly.

Dark timber with pale upholstery is perfect for your French Provincial style. White, gold or pale timber can also work but the dark timber will give you the elegance and contrast you are looking for.
