Well, speaking of pronunciation, you hear people pronouncing the Canadian province as New FOUND lanD - whereas, it's NoofunLANd.

There's a Come by Chance in Noofunland too. Guess there were a lot of lucky prospectors in both Canada and Australia.

My dad grew up near Moose Jaw, I have a cousin in Beaver Lodge, one in Osoyoos, my sister now lives in Peachland, and I have a second cousin, who is a monk, living, appropriately enough, in Mission, BC. I still like Skookumchuk as a place name, though. And Chilliwack.

in Sydney, there's a Rooty Hill, and Field of Mars. No one there finds those names at all strange.

I lived in Quakers Hill, NSW. Never saw a Quaker. Lots of Indian people there though.

Yes, I've lived in Australia for over 12 years now. But while you can take the Canuck out of Canada, you can never take the Canadian out of the Canuck, I guess. Tuktoyaktuk is another good Canadian place name.

What is a Canuck?

A Canuck is a Canadian. So, these days, I guess I'm an Aussie-Canuck. Doesn't exactly roll of the tongue, does it?

It's Ca-NUCK to rhyme with duck. Not sure of the origin, although there was a character in political cartoons in the 1860s named Johnny Canuck - a somewhat naive and not too bright lumberjack type continually fighting off the overbearing and interfering Americans and British. Oddly, the use of the word is considered derogatory in the US but not in Canada.

Seems logical to honour a patriot

Alberta has a place named Head Smashed In Buffalo Jump.

There's also Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, which can be a tongue twister to some and a Shubenacedie, Nova Scotia.

We have an Ottawa and a Nottawa. A Dildo, Newfoundland. A Vulcan, Alberta with shops that sell everything Spock. And a Blow Me Down, Newfoundland.

Someone from BC is a rock dodger and those from Saskatchewan are stubble jumpers.

Mick Jagger, when he played there, went into fits of giggles every time he said Regina, the capital city of Saskatchewan.
