Outdoor BBQ Alfresco Stone - To Join or not to Join?

We've recently become affiliated with our local BBQ retailer BBQ's & Outdoor, to assist clients in creating and executing the perfect outdoor entertaining space whilst streamlining the overall process.

We're now completing a series of showroom installations that will showcase our work across Melbourne.

We've always encased our BBQ's with a full wrap-around stone (or stainless) benchtop - under, behind & around the sides of the BBQ. Logically, this is a safer option while heat and gas are exiting the sides of the BBQ and, we believe, finishes the look.

We've come across an alternative design completed by other companies. This includes stone across the benchtop and straight underneath the BBQ. This would be a cheaper option considering it requires less stone, but the heat would be very close to Melamine board.

I'm wondering, if you were to install a built-in BBQ at your home, which option would you choose?

If you already have the alternative design - have you have any problems before?
